    Page file sizing

    Hi:
I recently (yesterday) inherited a Win2K machine from my son. It was working fine until we installed an external HDD (USB2.0) and a USB 2.0 card. It sees the new drive, etc., and I have been able to create an image of my C drive on the external for backup. The following problem suddenly popped up.
The machine boots up and partway thru the process announces that the page file sizes are too small and tells me how to correct them. I log in as administrator and follow the instructions. I set the new page file sizes to minimum 766MB, max 1GB, for both HDDs. I have 512MB of RAM.
The new setting appears to take - it announces that it now has 1500+MB page files.
When I reboot, the new setting goes away and I am back with the announcement that the page files are too small, do something, etc.
Something is resetting the page file size.
What am I missing ? What should I be doing ?
I am a complete novice at this.
Any and all help much appreciated.

    Ed
