Backup software for XP (Version 5.1 - SP1)

Can anyone recommend some good backup software for Windows XP? I have a CD burner, but I'd like to formalize my backup process.

    Thanks,
    Mary Kaplan

I would recommend Norton Ghost 2003 - follow the link for details.

If you are interesting in more options, consider Norton Systemworks 2004 Pro - it includes Ghost.

I recommend Acronis "True Image" as a good backup imaging program.

You can get, try or buy at TRUE IMAGE or at DETAILS

And, if you're interested in backing up selected files only, rather than the whole hard drive, <!post=look at this thread.,318856>look at this thread.<!/post>

    Hey there Big Al,

Long time. Anywho, don't you use or recommend Power Quest's Drive Image any more? I just purchased their latest version (7.0) for XP but haven't done a system backup yet. I thought you swore by that. I hope you're not swearing at it now. Did something change because in your linked thread I noticed your new choice for backup software?

I'm afraid I am, sorry to say! There are a couple of threads in the Software forum if you can find them, where I, for one, have had numerous problems with this latest version of Drive Image. Their tech support has "written me off" and I just got fed up with trying to make it work for me. You may remember that I do my drive imaging to a machine on my home LAN and I've had repeated failures with Drive Image. I've worked really hard at trying to make it work, but finally gave up.

Dang it, I wish I had more time to spend in the Lounge like I used to. See what I miss out on.

When you say latest version, are you referring to version 7.0? I ask because I found out there are known issues with version 2000 which used to be the version used with XP before SP1 and was the one available when you recommended it. However, now I understand version 2000 is only used on Win 98 and earlier Operating Systems.

I will have to give this new version a try. I may not encounter the problems you do, I hope, because I backup to a separate hard drive in a drive tray, another of your recommendations. If I do run into problems I

That's a very big misunderstanding, I'm afraid. PQ didn't do a very good job of making this clear to everyone. Version 2002 works quite WELL with XP! What they were trying to tell everyone was that version 7 will NOT work with Win98 or prior. It takes XP in order to use Version 7. Good luck.....

I use PowerQuest 8.0 and love it. But I don't backup over a Network on several partitions like Doc does. I use the Drive Copy option 99% of the time, and it works great. Makes an exact copy. I can copy 12GB of Data in under 6 minutes.

Confusing I know... But I know you meant 7 not 8. Drive Image is at Version 7 and Partition Magic is at Version 8.....

    Mary,

There are some good backup software out there. I use PQ DI 7 (PowerQuest Drive Image). I have a Dell P3, 977mhz, 256 mb ram, two 80gb hard drives, running Win XP Pro. I have had no probelms with DI 7 backing up to my spare drive where I keep a month worth of backups. DI2000 does have problems with Win XP Pro so don't go there. I do not have a network as some of the loungers do. They seem to have legitimate issues with DI 7 and a Network.

    Best Wishes,

    LMD

I use Drive Image 7 to back up across my network. Scheduled online full backups seem to work fine for me. I have even booted from the CD and done a restore across the network.
