Lost FAVORITES (WP Pro up to date)

Over the past several weeks I apparently lost the ability to add new URLs to the FAVORITES list. I have up-to-date IE6 + XP Pro. I don't have a clue how to even begin figuring out the problem. I do know that there was an MS update and ZoneAlarm Pro had an upgrade. There are continuing changes in Norton Anti-Virus, too, although I do not recall any progamming changes, only signature additions. I use version 2002 and it is up-to-date.
These are the "usual suspects" but who knows what else is out there? Evem the Google bar? Thanks in advance.

How many entries at the root level of your "Favorites" do you have?

There is a limit, but I can NOT remember how many it is.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Linus--

You might also run System File Checker to see if it fixes the problem--can't hurt you.

I also don't know the effect on your list functioning and adding of these but I'll pass them on:

Dave--

We talked about the number 193 listed in the root of favorites but not in the subfolders. See:

I think I remember a thread with a limit mentioned, but can't seem to find anything on a limit. I don't know if putting in a check at Tools>Options>Advanced>Enable Personalized Favorites Menu would help this. I also don't know if registering by typing "Regsvr32 URLMON.DLL" in the run box and rebooting would help. See:

There is another move you can make to force a new favorites folder. I also want to um borrow a couple tips from Woody's new book from his Favorites discussion first that I think are worth mentioning.

1) Keeping favorites organized can be as important as organizing the folder structure under My Documents (for me it's probably not but I use Fav Home Page and Fav to Go) and I save a lot of shortcuts in folders in lieu of favorites I used to save. Woody writes:

"A big part of the problem in organizing favorites is the hokey user interface Internet Explorer uses to help people keep it clean. Believe it or not the favorites list is actually based on a folder--more precisely a bunch of folders that IE uses to reconstruct the list on the fly. You'll find it much easier, faster, and more accurate to abandon the IE user interface and work directly with the Favorites folder. Here's how:

1) Start IE.
2) Hold down the shift key and then click Favorites>Organize Favorties.
3) Windows Explorer opens in your Favorites Folder.
4) Make changes to speed up navigation through the favorites maze by creating new folders, remaniming them, create shortcuts to documents or other folders anywhere on hour HD, or even on a shared folder.
5) When happy with the organization, click File>Exit to leave Windows Explorer.
6) Back in IE click favorites to confirm you want the changes.
7) To list your favorites in the order you want them, to appear, open your Favorites menu in IE, and click and drag any folder or items to new locations. When you drag any line in the Favorites list, you will see a dark bar where the item will go. Simply right-click, drag, and release to move folders and individual shortcuts.
8) Close any open IE windows.
9) All your favorites are now saved."

Forcing a New Favorites Directory on IE--Set a System Restore Point and Export the Registry Key First:

1) At one of the command prompts create a new directory (using the command MD) named WWWin the following location: "%UserProfile%StartMenuWWW." Be sure to include quotes in this command because this is a long file name.

2) Copy all your favorites , typically in %UserProfile%Favorites to your new directory at "%UserProfile%StartMenuWWW."

3)In the registry, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows]CurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders.

4) Edit the value entry Favorites, changing its value to %UserProfile%StartMenuWWW". This will force Internet Explorer to use your new Favorites directory instead of your original favorites.

[i]This tip was taken from Mastering Windows XP Registry[/b] by Peter Hipson (Sybex) p. 245.

I'd like to pretend I made it up in my hourly struggles with the registry but hey...

hth--as Dave says there may be a limit and other work-arounds and I'll keep looking and we may hear from some "FavoriteMavens."

Re: Lost FAVORITES (WP Pro up to date)

A related question - I moved Favorites from one XP-IE6 system to another using a zip file (easiest way to maintain the directory structure). Now, all the newly added Favorites show up in Windows explorer but not in IE. Anyone know why? Is there a straightforward way to move Fs from one system to another? All I see on the Import menu are "Bookmarks."

Thanks,

Re: Lost FAVORITES (WP Pro up to date)

I do it all the time, but just copy the subfolders and links at root. I do NOT replace the "Root" folder "Favorites" it self.

Re: Lost FAVORITES (WP Pro up to date)

OK, maybe I'm missing something here, but what is wrong with "Export" Favorites as a file "Bookmark.htm" and then "Import" on another system or the same after a re-install etc? It will maintain the structure.

I don't know how it works for other people, my Favorites directory is not super big, I think 1280 files & 135 directories.

Along the lines that Argus uses, the tip from Woody is that if you want to create a document with your list of Favorites, click File>Immport and Export and follow the steps in the Import/Export Wizard. Woody advices you can use the Import/Export Wizard to bring in a bunch of Favorites froma friend, but advises against doing it unless the friend is fastidious in keeping their Favorites list up-to-date.

Re: Lost FAVORITES (WP Pro up to date)

Okay. I've checked my listing of FAVORITES and I certainly was in excess of 200. Probably 250 or so would be the number.
So got got rid of a bunch, putting me down in the 150-160 level.
I also ran file checker, disk compaction, etc., etc.
Now I can use FAVORITES with a selection of sites --- but I still cannot make a favorite out the the 3 sites I was trying in the first place. Any ideas on why this would be so? Sites are http://www.geobase.ca/

www.geoconnections.ca

ftp://ftp.cits.nrcan.gc.ca/pub/geoba...a/filename.zip

I have no problem adding geobase.ca and geoconnections.ca to my favorites. The other two are not web pages, but file downloads (which I can't get at), it doesn't make sense to add them to favorites.

Re: Lost FAVORITES (WP Pro up to date)

Humm, I'll have to do some digging here. I could have sworn that I unzipped the previous-machine's favorites into my favorites directory. Maybe I'll just have to create a new Favorites directory and try it again. Or, perhaps, I'll try the Export route.

Thanks all,

Re: Lost FAVORITES (WP Pro up to date)

Well that might answer half the problem. Although I have added similar to favorites before (I think). But why would my system freeze when trying to add the others to the Favoriytes list? Thanks
