Word 2K wants to spellcheck imaginary text box

    What could have caused this?

I open a new blank document, type something, & press F7 to spellcheck while I'm in normal view. All of a sudden, I get a message box saying it can't spellcheck text boxes in normal view (there aren't any) & asks if I want to switch to Print Layout. Whether I say yes or no, it then spellchecks. I have my options set not to spellcheck while I type.

I discovered that if I replace normal.dot with a a backup, the problem goes away. I did check my normal.dot to make sure that there were no text boxes in it. I even went to the drawing toolbar & used the select tool to select the entire page, just in case I had an invisible (i.e. no border) text box. Nothing. I did virus scan all my templates--nothing.

Anyone have any ideas what could have caused this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Phil,

Just to make sure there isn't some kind of textbox hiding in your Normal.dot, you could:

    Open Normal.dot as a document.
Alt+F11 to go to the VB Editor.
Ctl+G to make the Immediate Window visible.
Paste the following line into the Immediate Window:

    ?ActiveDocument.Shapes.Count

Place the insertion point at the end of that line and then Enter.
If you don't get back a 0, then there is some kind of shape lurking about.

If for example, this returns "1", you could then put the following code into the Immediate Window:

    ActiveDocument.Shapes(1).Delete

and with the insertion point at the end of the line, press Enter.
(of course, you'd also have to wonder how an invisible textbox might have gotten into your Normal.dot...)

    Hi Gary:

Thanks for the instructions. The return is zero. I must have had this for several weeks without knowing (I guess I haven't checked my spelng recently <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>. The first backup I tried was from 3/18 and had the problem too. I had to go back to 3/6. Hopefully, I haven't lost too many customizations; I don't keep many in normal.dot--just style changes. It's just strange.
