Making a call once menu system

I have a website that uses Javascript to create drop-down menus.
I hate them. I find the menus slow and clunky and since they are on each page they have to be reloaded repeatedly. This was created in response to someone who had a real fetish for drop-down menus.
Now the site is live, http://www.ems-us.org, I anticipate a ton of complaints. Lord knows I would complain if anyone would listen to me.
I'm trying to think of ways to at least get around the problem of repeated reloading of the Java script. Any suggestions?

Or perhaps I should create the menu in flash, hopefully that would just require a single download of the flash movie.

I'm still mourning the loss of my asp breadcrumb and css menus. They were a ton faster!

    Cheers

    Hi Catherine,

Flash is one option (and not a bad one)... but perhaps the easiest thing is to dump all of the common menu-related content into a separate .JS file and reference it with a < link .... tag in the head section.

This way, the heavy menu stuff only has to download once (assuming it's the same from page to page). You may decide to leave the home page as it is since the menu is slightly different.

Give this a shot and post back if you run into any problems! Good luck!

These are very unusual menus, in the way they hang around for a few seconds after you depart the "hot zone" that triggers them. That aside, the code is waaaay too complicated for me to parse on the lunch hour. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    I refuse to accept credit/blame, since Dreamweaver/Fireworks created them automagically.... <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Thanks Mark
I ran a test on that idea this am. Unfortunately, I think the code has to change to adapt to living outside the file. And I have not the skill set to hack it at this time.

Looks like the flash option is the way to go....
