    embedding a video (office 97)

My son is doing a project for school in powerpoint. He wants to put a short .avi video into a slide to illustrate a point. However the video does not seem to want to "embed" into the powerpoint .ppt file, it merely seems to create a link to the file (which is on a cdrom).

Is there a way to embed the .avi into the powerpoint file so we don't have to worry about keepng multiple files together?

I suspect the AVI file is larger than the maximum size that PPT will let you embed by default. You could try changing that in the Tools/Options dialog box, but you would probably need a pretty robust machine as AVI files tend to be BIG - 30 to 50 MB is not uncommon, and I've seen them as large as 500MB.

Check the file size and then look at Tools / Options / General and see what the setting for Link sounds with file size greater than XXX is set to. If it's less than the size of the avi file, you can bump it up to something bigger and it should embed rather than link. (I'm presuming that 97 works the same as 2002 which is all I have access to at the moment.)

Unfortunately, you can't embed the AVI.

You need to copy the AVI from the CD, paste it in the folder with your presentation, and *then* insert it into your presentation. This creates a relative link, so that when you later copy both your presentation and that AVI to another CD to transport it to the school, those links remain intact.

I'm confused - did you mean video will always be linked?

Yes. Video will always be linked.

(I did type embedded, didn't I?! Duh. Thanks for catching me!)

This only works on sounds. Video will be embedded regardless of what's in the Tools/Options setting.

    Sorry, this should have read
Video will be linked regardless of what's in the Tools/Options setting.

Not to worry - my fingers frequently type something different from what my brain was telling them! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

If you have a Gif Animator program you can convert it and then embed it.
