Can't open anything in the control panel

I have windows 98 and for the last few months have been unable to open any of the icons in the control panel. I have reinstalled windows 98 and the control panel will open for about a day or less and then I have the problem again. Someone suggested I go to start>find> and type in "*.cpl" without the quotes. This also works for a while and I can access some of the files but not all of them. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: Can't open anything in the control panel

A search of the MSKB came up with a few Control Panel problems, but it can be very dependant upon what software you have.

What happens if you try to open the Control Panel?
Is it the Control Panel that won't open or icons within the Control Panel that won't open?
Have you tried to open the CP by opening My Computer & then dbl clicking CP? Control Panel Seems to Load Slowly in Windows 95/98

Make sure you have the correct version of Control.exe. See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q132/8/85.asp

You might also try replacing your *.cpl files in case they're corrupt. See Invalid Page Fault Opening Control Panel

Do you have a scanner with a Vhpscand.vxd file? If so, see Fatal Exception Error When Opening or Closing Control Panel

There are some other 3rd party apps that can cause problems, but you can go to the Knowledge Base & search under "Control Panel".

Hope this helps.

Re: Can't open anything in the control panel

Hi, I thank you very much for your help with my problem in the control panel. I had too many others things that were not performing properly so I formatted the hard drive and started anew. Now everything is working properly and I know more about the computer workings than I ever wanted to know. But thanks again for your help.
