Desktop Background when no logged on (XP)

I have set a medium-sized picture as my Desktop Background, position Centre. This works fine when logged on to our domain.

However, the picture is stretched (horribly!) to fill the entire screen when I log off from the domain, and before I log on. Not a Major Problem, but nice to (un-)have!

What/where do I need to change to produce the same centred result? Thanks!

Have a look at this thread. Don't get confused by the loose use of terminology! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

OK, I'll bite. What's with the userpic? Have you been to Denmark lately?

Re: Desktop Background when no logged on (XP)

Perhaps I should have said that I get this stretching problem only on my XP Pro desktop at work; it doesn't do the stretching effect on my XP Pro desktop at home, so hacking kernels cannot be involved.

I'll now go away and read thoroughly the post you mentioned (I never look at the Windows 2000 Forum...).

    Thanks!

Much later, following several cups of coffee...
I'm not convinced that anything in that post actually applies to my situation!

I am using Classic Desktop, and the relevant setting is in Display Properties => Desktop => Position (Center). If I were to change this setting to Stretch, I would get exactly the same results as I currently get after logging off, or before logging on, where the picture is stretched both horizontally and vertically to fill the screen completely (in a distorted manner).

I suspect that a different userid (perhaps the Default User, .DEFAULT, ?) operates during this "not logged on" period, and my next step will be to poke around in the Registry, perhaps with the assistance of REGMON, to see if I can track down what's set...

    Much more laterer...
    My surmise is correct!
If you change HK_USERS.DEFAULTControl PanelDesktopWallpaperStyle from 2 (Stretch, apparently) to 0 (Center, apparently), the picture remains centred and does not get stretched! (I also observe there is an additional key called "TileWallpaper", which for this purpose I'm not interested in.)

    Phew!

(Now someone will tell me there's an easier way....!)

Sorry for the pun, John - no offense was intended. Not only did I not think to check your profile, but I'm seriously out of touch with the classical musical world, especially on your side of the pond. The one problem with MY tastes in music is that my "likes" are so broad that I don't really keep up well with any one genre. Anyway, good show!

    Al

Having a very high density (specific gravity?) factor, I didn't actually get the Denmark reference. Was it a result of Unkamunka's windmill?

BTW, I am glad you resolved the problem with the stretching! Now, onward with the hijacking... Sorry about the oblique reference to Christine Jorgensen, who was (in my memory) one of the first transsexuals widely publicized in the American press. See here.

<hr>...By 1952, when American GI George Jorgensen decided to became Christine, she found surgeons in Scandinavia... <hr>

Ah, I see what you mean!

Not even the most skilled surgeon in the known universe would have been able to transform me to look like Rebecca Outram (although some people, mainly me, say I have a certain charm...!).

Re: Desktop Background when no logged on (XP)

    John,

No hacking of kernels necessary. Hacking of the registry, so to speak, may be. Navigate to HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTControl PanelDesktop and look at the value for WallpaperStyle. If the value does not exist, add it as type REG_SZ (string). The following values are valid:
    <UL><LI>0: Centered, no stretching
    <LI>1: Tiled
<LI>2: Stretched[/list]I believe this is why you have different behaviour on your XP machines.

    Edited to add:
Unlike you, John, I had not imbibed my java when I replied to this and failed to note that you found the solution yourself. <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30>

    Mark

I'm pleased to see we came to very similar (but not identical!) conclusions.

It doesn't surprise me that you missed my edited edit in all the other stuff in this thread!!
