Upgrade to IE 6 SP 1? (6 (SP 1))

Periodically a site advises or requires me to upgrade to a more recent browser.

I have IE 5.00.2614.3500C, on a Dell computer with a Pentium II (667 MHz), 128 MB of RAM, running Windows 98, Second Edition (4.10.2222A).

The IE site claims that I only need 16 MB of RAM and 12.4 MB space on my hard drive for IE 6 SP 1. Is there any particular disadvantage or danger in upgrading to IE 6 SP 1, or should I just go ahead and do it?

Regrettably, you'll probably find IE6 to be slower as it's a bigger beast, but you are awfully out of date on patches, so for the sake of security, you probably should upgrade. I think there were initially issues with IE6 and Windows 98, but lately I haven't seen too many complaints here. (Perhaps scan the Windows 98 forum, too.)

You might look at upgrading to IE 5.50 as a minimum - if you can track it down. I do know that some web pages do not scroll properly on some setups with IE 5.0. HTH

Should you choose to follow Unkamunka's suggestion and go to a different version of IE than the very latest, you can find the installation package at the Evolt Browser archive.

I can verify "issues" with 98SE and MSIE 6, I had quite a party trying to get it working when it crashed a while back, managed to get it going again after I reverted to an older version, then reinstalled 6 again, then the patch. Only a few days back I logged on with that machine to find the browser (after it worked with MSIE 6 for about 4 months) was stuffed again. I ended up using ADD REMOVE PROG to firstly try repairs, which did not work, then taking it back to version 5.5. Now its working brilliantly, in fact it is so much better than it has been since I took it to version 6, that Im leaving it alone. I use MSIE 6 on other machines, but perhaps on 98 its better left on an earlier version, HTH

Odd that you should mention that. I have had a run of bad experiences with IE 6 and Windows 98 machines. My solution, however, was to avoid Windows 98!

Funny about that, I confess that now Im using XP Pro, my poor old 98 looks a little tired! But (she cries valliantly) it is the OS of my desktop machine, which still works hard when in use. (I also talk to my plants!)

So the truth comes out. No fault in talking to plants, they (hopefully) will not talk back. I for one have been known to utter a few choice words at various computers in my time...

In all honesty, I experienced problems from lockups to slow performance once I upgraded to IE6 on Windows 98 machines. So much so, in fact, that I avoided it altogether for quite some time and stayed with version 5.5. Of late I have become very fond of Mozilla Firebird, a lean mean browsing machine. In fact, the lastest version of it has all the amenities that I liked about Internet Explorer (autocomplete, the CTRL+Enter shortcut for entering URLs, etc) and even imported my IE history to make the transition seamless.

The only drawback to using a prior version of IE that I can see is the lack of updates that we all know will be coming. Microsoft would like nothing more than to force us all into a newer version of what is rapidly becoming a sub-standard browser, and being so tightly integrated with the OS, I find myself upgrading even though I may not use it at all.

That is a good thought Mark, I have a copy of Moz Firebird, I should load it and see for myself, yes? Good point about the older version of MSIE disallowing updates. (....my plants are indeed better behaved than most people I know, and of course they talk back, you mean yours don't)? :-)

Well, the snapdragons are a little snappy at times, and watch out for the Venus Flytrap - it has a tendency to bite the hand that feeds it....

If you have the most recent version of Firebird, I would definitely give it a spin. I was loathe to change for a long time simply because of the lack of a few things that IE had that spoilt me, as noted in my previous post. Now I have no reason not to change! I should also mention that Firebird's extensibility is excellent. You can download all sorts of extensions to the browser, right from within the preferences box, to make it work the way you prefer. Unlike IE, the extensions do not appear to break the browser either.

There's also that very useful right-click extension to Open Pages in IE - when pages (such as MSKB) don't render fully in Firebird.

Aye, I had not found that one. Is it on the same page as the other extensions?

Yes, it's under Page Display and is called IE View.

After trying many extensions over time, I would only recommend Tabbrowser Extensions (a must & much better than its alternatives), PopUp ALT Attributes (for all the Lounge Smilies) and GoUp. While others are good, I tend to hardly - if ever - remember to use them.

Thanks Unk...true to form, I asked the question and then set out to hunt for it, finding it at roughly the same time your reply came in. I was sidetracked by some other nifty plug-ins and I am certain you know how these things work: download, download, download, forget, forget, forget. The saving grace is that I can easily remove them if I need to.
