Doing Virus Scan from 98 Startup disk

    Hi folks,

I have someone who handed me a dead system running Win98. It would load the splash screen, then immediately say, "You can use Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart your computer." Safe Mode was equally unresponsive. I can navigate the drive with Safe Mode Command Prompt and don't see anything fishy. I immediately suspected a hardware issue, but after several tests, it comes back to the hard drive. Scandisk shows nothing. I tried loading Win2K as a parallel install, and it failed about 3/4 of the way through. I'm about ready to give up and reformat & reinstall, but I figured that I'd try running a virus scan first. Which brings me to the point of this post :-) :

I have a Norton AV CD that can boot. Has anyone had success in downloading and installing up-to-date virus definitions in DOS mode to be able to do a proper scan?

    Thanks for your help.

Never had the occasion to do so. Try letting the CD boot and scan on its own, perhaps you will strike gold.

What makes you suspect a hardware issue? Any messages appear when the Windows 2000 installation failed?

Yeah, I did, but the virus definitions on the disk I have date back to August 2001.

I suspected hardware because I had a similar no boot problem on another client's system, and it turned out to be a faulty memory chip.

The Win2K install gave no error message, just failed in the middle and did an automatic no-warning reboot.

It's a moot point now -- I did a repartition, reformat and reinstall and everything's working fine now.

I certainly hope it's moot. I would hate to see you mend your phrase 'everything's working fine now' to 'everything was working fine.' Or perhaps, since we are talking about Windows, it should be everything's working fine for now'?

    Glad you got it fixed!

    Mark,

Your qualifications are certainly justified. I think I'll go with the "for now" option.
