Setting up XP Home (XP Home)

I've ordered and am about to receive a laptop with XP Home preinstalled. (I''ve been limping along with Windows ME for a couple of years). Although I've followed the XP forum for some time and picked up a lot of tips and solutions to problems, I'd like to find a good source or two or three that will tell me some "must-do's" in setting up the OS.

Must do: feed it plenty of RAM (512MB is the sweet spot). Make sure your hardware is on the Hardware Compatibility List. Prepare to swear a lot and have brandy or a good red handy. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Really, make sure your system meets the minimum requirements specified by Microsoft, and remember that they are bare minimums. More is usually better when it comes to Windows XP and hardware.

If the OS is preinstalled, some of what you will want to accomplish will depend on whether you want to wipe the drive clean and start the install from scratch. This may not be an option depending on the manufacturer you purchase the PC from; some do not ship full installation CDs - only a recovery disc that will restore the machine to its factory state. Check up on this and know what you are getting.

As far as tweaks and changes, there are as many as are opinions on their effectiveness. My recommendation would be to try the system as is, and after some use you will be better able to identify what you feel needs changing or tweaking.

"setting up": tips, dealing with any problems/oddities or major differences between XP and earlier OS's. My laptop will have 512 MG RAM, and I know I'll have to download new drivers for my printer, scanner, etc., so anything beyond that . . . .

You may be pleasantly surprised at how well the machine will deal with such things as printers, scanners and the like. The last time I installed XP (Pro) on a laptop, it was a PIII 600 Gateway and I didn't need any new drivers at all for such things as video, sound, touchpad and so on. Be sure to get yourself a copy of TweakUI for XP as the latest version does a lot for you. Since I haven't installed it yet, I'm not sure about the recently mentioned Tweakomatic and what it will do for you. And I know you're aware already about a firewall and some of the <!post=dirt bag prevention,296439>dirt bag prevention<!/post> tools mentioned here. Good luck with it!

If you want to get a little deeper into XP, an excellent resource is http://www.blackviper.com. The whole world of XP's administrative services is a little daunting and quite intoxicating. There is just no better source of information on the web about services.
    Enjoy,

Thanks, Kip. I'm familiar with that site but hadn't thought of it in reference to my question.
