    Drive Letter Assignments

I just installed an 80 gig primary drive, divided into three partitions, a primary partition, and 3 extended partitions. I also have a secondary 8 gig hard drive in one partition. In addition I am running 2 CD drives -- a CDRW, and a CD/R.

I had thought that W2K, seeing the 2 drives, would assign the letters as C (primary), D (secondary drive), E (first extended), F (second extended), G (thrd extended), and H &I for the 2 CD drives. At least this is the way it had appeared to be working previously.

But now I see that what it did with the new drive is C, E, F, and *I*, inserting the two CD drives as G & H.

How and why did this happen, and how can I change these numbers without re-installing everything?

Minor point I suppose, except that I do not like surprise assignments of drive letters etc...

    Re: Drive Letter Assignments

If you want an exhaustive technical explanation, look here. I warn you though, read this when you are ready to call it a night because it may just induce sleep.

If what you want is to correct the drive letter assignments, open the Disk Manager by going to Start - Run - diskmgmt.msc. From there, you can right click on the drive letters and re-assign them. You will have to work it like a puzzle where you slide the pieces around in a grid until you can see the picture it creates, if that makes any sense. But at least you can change them.

    Re: Drive Letter Assignments

When you have reassigned the drive letters, you may wish to check the Registry to see whether things have become dislocated. If editing the Registry makes you nervous, then it isn't essential. Also back up the Registry beforehand. If you do wish to plough ahead, start at the top and enter G:, H: and I: as your search criteria. Check whether what you find will be thrown out by your new configuration.

One final piece of advice. If you move the CDs to be drives Y and Z now then they will be completely out of the way in the future, and you won't have to do this again.
