Getting PMX added to my subject lines (OE 6)

For some reason OE has started appending [PMX:#] to the subject line of some of my incoming and outgoing email. Anyone ever seen this before? It's really annoying. Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Abraham,

PMX search comes up with many things from a MAC project management prog to a punk rock group from Scotland.
Possibly something has highjacked your mail settings? Try running AdAware & Spybot to see if something comes up there.

Bob,
Thanks for the suggestion. Problem solved, it turns out that my ISP added a new anti-spam service which adds the PMX (for Pure Message) to the subject line of messages that it thinks might be spam.
regards,

Abraham,

Glad your problem is solved. Did they give you any notice of this change or just slip it in?

BTW, is your server Comcast or ATT by any chance? Reason I ask is that a friend asked me about a very similar problem he is having with those rather mysterious prefixes showing up on his system lately. Curious.

Bob,

I think there might have been notice, but in the form of: "here's something new we're doing that we'll improve your life" not, "and it might have unintended consequences."

Though I also use Comcast, the PMX stuff was coming from my university ISP. Apparently it's designed to add [PMX:] and between 1 and 4 # signs before the ] to give a measure of how sure the system is that it has found a piece of spam. Then you can filter based on how many # signs you get. [PMX:####] should be almost certainly spam. In my limited experience, it does a pretty good job of identifying spam, and also seems to catch a lot of my list-generated email.

Hope this helps your friend.

Abraham,

I'll pass this along to my friend. He is also an ex-prof at Yale U., so maybe he is tied into their system and they have something similar to that. We both appreciate you input.
