    Printing Problem (One Note 2003)

I use One Note 2003 to gather notes for presentations because you can paste pictures/bitmapsand text and it doesn't have the constraints of Word or Word Pad in moving them around and you can "shuffle" the text faster in any order you want it to appear finally. It also has most of the basic[formatting features of Word.

There are 6 pages. The first page is fine, but the first page is the only one I can see with Print Preview which is not the usual case. Page 2 and 3has a bottom sentence cut off; ; 4 and 5 have the top and bottom cut off; and 6 has the top cut off.

Here's the problem: Unlike most cases of Print Preview, there are no arrows to view page by page so I really can't find a way to make it useful. If I print a web page with IE and Windows XP, usually there is a way to view each page and correct any problem--and although I haven't checked every situation--I would think from any other Office app. If the ability to hit the arrow to go to the next page is not available this time for some reason, I need to find out why.

Page Setup shows the print margins ghosted, and I'm not sure how to unghost them. The default is Top .5" and bottom .5" and left and right 1". If the pulldown that defaults to "Auto" can make a difference, I'm not sure how.

I can't check using Print Preview as you normally would, because although there are actually 6 pages that print out (for some reason it says 3 because there are 3 One Note pages occupied) but there are no arrows to go to the next page as their always are.

I haven't installed this application, so it's hard to comment on what's happening. Two questions:

    (1) Does it work properly with plain text documents?

    (2) Does it print properly? If so, you could "preview" by printing to pdfFactory and using its preview window. (You only need the trial version for this, since you wouldn't care about the footer it adds to the PDFs.) Nice thing about pdfFactory: you don't have to save the view the file.

Re: Printing Problem (One Note 2003)

    1) It does work properly with plain text documents--it's only the pasted ones (amalgams of documents I use to get ideas) that give me the problem. I do have arrows in Print Preview--the screen resolution (1024 X 768) I use and want to stay with makes me have to drag down the task bar to see them. I think that Print Preview in One Note has a slightly different design. This access to arrow problem always happens with an Adobe Print dialogue box, so I'm used to that. My task bar is double width to accomodate Dave's Quick Search Toolbar Deskbar Taskbar. There is no scale content to paper width setting on my print preview box in One Note to apply a zoom %. As to Page Setup, everything there is ghosted in Print Margins.

    2) If I paste from articles, it doesn't print properly, and I know you have said that you like pdfFactory, and I'll give it a try and report back.

I hope you will load One Note because I would be interested to see what you think of it. I like that it has the basic formatting of Word--it allows highlighting in colors, and most that you can drag your text "through text" in order to rearrange paragraphs or Word which is faster than being bound by Word's formatting rules and even faster than cutting and pasting. One Note would also have the advantage in a conference or a classroom situation that with a Mike it will print and it's only limitation for doing this is how much hard drive space you have so you could easily do it for hours or days for that matter. I know Word has voice to text, but I'm not sure how they compare in convenience.

For anyone wanting to try One Note--it can be tried for 60 days free from the Office site.

    Jefferson--

I also wanted to make clear that what's happening is Print Preview is indicating that everything is fine, but in all the pages, I'm getting cutoff of half or all the sentence in the first page at the bottom and the other five pages at thet top and bottom. If I turn to Page Setup as a lot of people would then suggest, I can't do any adjusting because ever adjusting option is ghosted out.

Hmmm... sounds like the product isn't done yet. I'll probably wait a while before installing it. Nothing new there. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Re: Printing Problem (One Note 2003)

It can do more for sure than I've been doing with it and of course it was positioned for the tablet but they should have made it for PDA's and for sure they will with the next version. While it's not earth shaking, I find it convenient and sort of a notepad on steroids with the convenience of being able to drag text or pictures around. The tablet connection is the ability to write with a stylus in it on a tablet and soon on a PDA. But it's not buggy. It's not going to interfere with anything that I know of.

Re: Printing Problem (One Note 2003)

You don't need me to tell you they're never done--it's one Beta continuum--and we're all perpetual Beta testers.

Workaround to One Note Printing Problem

    1) In File>Page Setup Change Auto-Selection in the Upper Right Corner to say "Letter." That pull down does work. That allows you to change height and width, but you can leave them at 8.5X11".
    2) Then change the margin to .5" on all sides. This corrects the header/footer cut-off.
    3) Then resize the text container to where 1" is on-screen on the left and right--any bigger and the sides move off the page. File>Print Preview lets you look.
    4) There is no zoom%--just a checkbox that says "scale to paper width."
    5) Some people do this with other Office components to get the toolbars outside the Word window to give the documents more visual space.
