    Blue screen FS-Rec.sys after ScanDisk (WinXPproSP1 )

    Hi,
Since several months I always get a blue screen after having scanned with ScanDisk on WinXPproSP1 (at least, after that most of the ScanDisk operations have been achieved).
The incriminated file in the blue screen is FS-Rec.sys
    Address FA7A9751D base at F7A97000, Datestamp 3b7d8361.
I don't get this specific blue screen (incriminating FS-Rec.sys) in other situations.
    Is there a solution ?
    Thank you in advance.

Have you run a full virus scan on the PC?

I'm not trying to ask a cute question. But when you say Scan Disk--there isn't a Scan Disk in XP. So you mean running Chkdsk from the gui I think don't you?

Have you tried SFC { System File Checker}? Also have you looked in Device Manager to see if you have any exclamation marks? Is there anything else that is not working correctly, such as sound or recording?

Yes, I have run a full virus scan on the PC.
    Yes, I mean "running Chkdsk".
Yes, I have recently tried SFC.
I have no exclamation mark in Device Manager.
The only permanent problem I have since several months is a CMOS failure at the opening of the computer which obliges me to update the BIOS. I know that it does not come from my battery and that is is common with my mothercard (ECS K7S5A).

Have you changed IDE cables on the drive itself? Anything in the Event Viewer (Start - Run - eventvwr.msc)?

I have a lot of events in the event viewer!!!
I will look at the event viewer the next time I get a blue screen incriminating FS-Rec.sys after Chkdsk.
Maybe this will help me to understand what happened.

Remember, you can filter out the information events and look only at the trouble codes. It should make wading through the events a little easier. You might want to consider clearing the event logs and starting fresh with them, also. That way you have even less to look through.

    Sorry, it's fs_rec.sys and not not FS-Rec.sys.
It is in the folder windows/system32/drivers and only in this folder.
    It's a part of Microsoft

What kind of stop is it? In the MSKB there is an article saying that a faulty memory stick could cause an error in fs_rec.sys. Can you test the memory? Can you replace it?

It appears you are not alone in having problems with uninstalling InCD.

Nero offer a Clean Tool - otherwise a Google on "remove incd" should give you plenty of other routes to try...

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL tags. See the markup help. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    1) I did not detect any error either with MS Windows Memory Diagnostic (10 passes) or with MemTest 86 3.0 (1 pass).
    2) After a new turn of chkdsk, I could see in the Event Viewer that the problem might come from the fact that fs_rec.sys could not find the InCD UDF Driver. (I had uninstalled InCD because I got too often a blue screen when I used it).
    3) I re-installed InCD and I did not get a blue screen after the next Chkdsk However I got exactly the same message in the Event Viewer (Windows cannot start InCD because it cannot find the file).
    4) InCD appears to be the best greatest producer of blue screens: it produces them either when it's installed (and used) or when it's uninstalled! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>
    5) I have been surprised to find that the newest version number of fs .sys in the MS DLL HELP DATABASE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...ion/dllinfo.asp) was 4.0.1381.4 4.0.1381.(dated 9/3/1997), whereas I have the version 5.1.2600.0. on my HD.
    6) I will stop my research if I don't get a blue screen after chkdsk even if EventViewer still detects an error.
    7) Thank you very much for your help <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> ..
