    Animated GIFs and ZoneAlarm Pro

I've put this here because the original thread will drop out of Scuttlebutt in a couple of weeks, and it may be of interest to future users.

    PROBLEM
Having installed ZoneAlarm Pro (4.5 in my case), animated GIFs no longer work (in the Lounge, this means Lex, a few UserPics, and several of the Smilies)

    GENERAL SOLUTION for all websites
Open the ZoneAlarm Pro control panel, and click on Privacy => Main => Ad Blocking => Custom => Ads to Block, and remove the tick in front of Animation

PARTICULAR SOLUTION for the Lounge only
Open the ZoneAlarm Pro control panel, and click on Privacy, then on Site List tab, right-click on the site (www.wopr.com), select Options, click on Ad Blocking tab, then in "Ads to Block" remove the tick from the box which precedes "Animation"

    DOWNSIDE
This can allow through particular "animated advertisements", so choose whether you wish to make the solution general or particular.

These procedures should work, but, as I always say: "Your kilometerage may vary"...

    My solution would be to ditch ZoneAlarm entirely and get a different firewall! <img src=/S/meltdown.gif border=0 alt=meltdown width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/flee.gif border=0 alt=flee width=25 height=25>

I don't think you are fleeing fast enough! You might as well say "ditch XP and go to Linux" (Oops, we've been here before...!!)

Why not try Sygate (you'll have to hunt around the website) or even Agnitum Outpost. Both are much more user-friendly products - for the same price.

    Jefferson

I just get the first frame (I presume), so for the Big Cheese which gradually appears, I get nothing. I presume they do that by not allowing further frames, like in animated adverts. (Not a technical explanation, but, hey, I don't know how animated GIFs are actually displayed, anyway...!)

I don't know why people have a down on ZoneAlarm -- we're only talking about configuration options, after all!

    John,
An animated Gif is like a movie in minature. A series of different pictures, spliced together and displayed in sequence to give the visual effect of movement, motion or changes. Big Al was using a signature for a while that he created using PSP Animator. Just his signature chopped up into seperate images and displayed in a timed sequence to create the effect. Simple but useful technique.

I agree with your opinion on ZA too. The settings are there for the users convenience. A one-size-fits-all firewall would not be my idea of a useful utility. If you can't take the time to learn how to use the software you install on your system, your computing experience will directly reflect your lack of preparation and concern.

Maybe they change a bit in the file as it comes in. Otherwise, I can't image how they stop it from animating. Hmmm...

Re: Animated GIFs and ZoneAlarm Pro

John, thanks to you and the archives (December 2003), my Animated Gifs have been restored. They became still in nature about a week ago, and I cannot recall having changed any software that might have caused the problem.

Anyway, just wanted to thank you for that post of 2 years ago!! <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

Now, just gotta figure out why IE seems to be slow to load. [Have performed the usual spyware audit with Ad-Aware, SpyBot, SpySweeper and WinPatrol.]

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob
