My Documents (home)

Lately, the "My Documents" folder which I changed to "The Vault" changes its own name back to"My Documents". Why is my computer overruling my name choice? I'm beginning to wonder who's really in charge here. Score one for the computer.

You're in charge, the computer is just sneakier.

When does the name change back to My Documents occur? After a reboot, or right after you change the name?

How/where are you changing it? Which version of XP? Are you on a network or using simple file sharing?

    Re: My Documents (home)

To get the name change to stick, you have to go through the Registry and change virtually every instance of "My Documents" that applies to your user profile to the desired name. The usual warnings apply: don't do this unless you're comfortable with taking the risks, and set a System Restore point before you start.

I'm not sure when it happens. I leave the computer running 24-7 but use Windows-L to get to the logon screen (my wife doesn't like to use my desktop). I'll change the name at night and find it changed the next day.

Are you sure that you need to edit the registry to achieve this? I would think that it would be risky business unless you knew the specific keys that need to be changed.

As Mary asked, how are you changing the name? Do you right-click on the folder and select Properties?

Try changing the name, rebooting, and see if it sticks. If it does, then have your wife log in with her profile, and see if it then changes. I would bet that when she changes users is when the rename occurs.

    Re: My Documents (home)

That has tended to be my experience. Since name changes have started being possible through the User Interface, I have started with the change there and still tended to find it necessary to go through the Registry as well.

If you search only for the words My Documents, it does tend to become obvious what you are doing - and whether you are changing Profiles other than your own. The rule of thumb about not attempting a change without considering the overall consequences does apply. I did a quick review before I posted and could not immediately see a key that obviously needed to be left unchanged.

As you probably realise, the more installs you deal with over time, the less of a compulsive tweaker you tend to become.

    Zeno--

There does seem to be more than one way to do this, as Mark mentioned--at least two-- a regedit or a VB6 Utility-- and maybe several. Does Doug Knox's write up help here?"

    Re: My Documents (home)

Well, now that my last minute Christmas shopping is done, I tried all the suggestions (except the registry edit). Unfortunately, nothing seems to make it stick. The system seems to have a mind of its own.
