Unprotect a word document (MS Word 2002)

    I forgot the password for a word document. The file was created on my old laptop ( HD dead). Is there anyway to unprotect the file?

    It depends. The password to open a document is relatively strong and you can purchase "password recovery" software from Russian companies on the web. The password to protect for forms or tracked changes is relatively weak and can be removed in two ways without spending any money:

Using only Word:
    [list=1]
Save As in RTF format.

Close the document.

Open the RTF document. It still is protected but there is no password.

Remember to Save As DOC to avoid further loss of proprietary features.

    Here's a new way: Protection Bypass Vulnerability in Microsoft Word from Windows & .NET Magazine Network. I haven't tried it myself.

    I looked at the article & assume that it only applies to a protected form (the second type of protection you mention) & not to a document that has the open protection (the first type you mention). The first step is to open the document in Word, so.... .
