Can't play WAV files (6.0 using XP)

Internet Explorer no longer plays WAV files when I'm visiting a page that has a WAV file embedded in it. I checked "File Types" under Folder Options and it's there. It was linked to WinAmp, so I changed it to Explorer, and when that failed, I tried another program or two with no luck. Any suggestions?

    TIA,
    RR

Have you tried setting it to Windows Media Player - either the current version or mplayer2.exe?

Can you play WAV files directly - via Sounds and Audio devices in Control Panel (or using WMP)? If you can, then maybe you could try reinstalling IE. If not, then try reinstalling the drivers for your Sound Card.

    Rickir--

I know this is simplistic but if you haven't go to every setting/checkbox on your sound card and in the Sounds dialogue box on the Control Panel and make sure a check hasn't been put in the wrong place or a lever isn't down when it should be up and also check your speaker settings. If they aren't right, you may have this trouble. Sometimes strange causes or software interaction can cause these to change when no one has done it on purpose. Also disconnect your speakers' plugin to your tower and reconnect it if this is on a desktop. I'm not sure if it's a laptop or notebook or something else.

I always do this as quick first troubleshooting for sound. Also check in Device Manager to make sure their are no bangs anywhere on sound drivers.

When you figure it out, let us know. I HATE when WAV files play automatically (especially really bad ones!) and I'd like to make it stop.

Is this another case of a MIME Content Type error?

Remember, IE does not look directly at the file associations to determine the program to play a .wav file. Instead, it looks at the MIME Content Type. So, try as you may to reassociate it using the File Types Dialog box, you will fail.

Jeff -- do you have your HTML version of my test file? I am away from home....

At the time this happens, take a look in Event Viewer under both Application and System. Run>Eventvwr.msc>OK Maybe you can get some information error or otherwise there.

Re: Can't play WAV files (6.0 using XP)

That's good information - thanks. Reading your post made me remember that I used a program to delete duplicate files that hadn't been used in a while. I remember there were references to WAV files (probably drivers) in more than one folder. Bet I deleted one of the files and am now paying the price. The folder containing the deleted files is long gone. Since I'm on an office computer and have no access to the software, I think I'm screwed....

Nah... Don't assume you can't hack it back together! Can't you just re-install MediaPlayer and have it put back in the files it needs?

Hmmmm, I like your idea and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I'll start reloading the MediaPlayer and see what happens.
