What's this file? (XP Home SP1)

I use ZoneAlarm (the freebie), and from time to time it asks me if I want to allow a program called backWeb-7288971.exe to access the Internet. I keep saying no, meaning to check into the identity of this file. I found it in c:WindowsPrefetch, and the full name is backWeb-7288971.exe.038cbe3d.pf. The properties sheet tells me nothing: it's a PF file, whatever that is, and it opens with "unknown application." The summary tab is completely blank. Anybody got any idea what this thing is? And what's a prefetch folder?

Lucas, Files in the prefetch folder are by XP to tell it how to load faster at startup. Backweb is an app that can be used to check for updates in the background. Kodak's Easyshare software uses backWeb-7288971.exe to autoupdate. There may be others also.

Joe: Thanks a bunch for the quick reply. As a matter of fact, I use Kodak's Easyshare software, thanks to my purchase of a new Kodak digital camera about two weeks ago. That explains it! You're a big help! Happy holidays!

Lucas,
You're quite welcome. Enjoy the camera. We've had one for four years and still love it. Happy Holidays to you also.

Some consider Backweb to be Spyware.

Backweb is a generic, background downloading tool that software vendors can incorporate into their product to download data (e.g. product updates) to the user's PC without your permission. Its operation depends on the instructions given to it by the individual software vendor who bundles it. While this software has been neither exhonorated nor convicted of malice, some aspects of its installation and operation appear suspect.

Personally I don't like anything that can load files on to my Computer without permission, not even Microsoft.

You'll probably know that BackWeb is also used by Norton AntiVirus's LiveUpdate mechanism, but here the process is given the name backWeb-8876480.exe, at least it is on my PC!

John,
Where and how are you find "backWeb-8876480.exe" that is part of NAV?

I can not find it on any of my machines (5 of them) using NAV.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Dave

You are entirely correct! Apologies - what I had thought was a component of Norton's LiveUpdate is, in fact, found as
C:Program FilesLogitechDesktop Messenger8876480ProgrambackWeb-8876480.exe

This is a product of assuming that when I install two products at roughly the same time, the "obvious" BackWeb system was Norton.

Now I have to work out WHY Logitech uses BackWeb...? And probably stop it?
(I already did this with Kodak, because I knew about it, and it kept wanting to download tens of megabytes of software...)

(You have to keep a really close eye on these software manufacturers, haven't you...!)

Dave,

Why does it seem like there are so many people ready to "bash" Norton at the slightest hint of a problem? Same for MS?
I'll bet there as many ( if not more ) problems created by the "users" than are the fault of the software. But, rest assured, I'm not letting the software people off the hook either.
BTW, my endorsement check from Norton should be arriving in the mail soon!

Because there are, I think. I think of this like my kids...they irritate the hell out of me sometimes, but I am not about to put them up for adoption and have more to see if I like them better.

Can you forward me the information on the Symantec endorsement program? I could use a cheque.

All I said was no Comment. What part of that was bashing? I thought I was very polite. Now if ya want to know the truth, Norton is ... Got ya again.

But CBD, it was NOT Norton's but that lousy hardware company that I will not use any product from.

Now Cowboy,

No one said you were bashing. You WERE being very polite. It was just a general statement of what seemed like some people make of MS & Norton. Every man to his own opinion, right?
