Why Win Explorer as server? (XP Sp-1 Spanish)

I just ran last months security updates (was in the middle of a project, couldn't afford to change a thing just in case). I now find that Windows Explorer is constantly asking permission to act as a server. Nothing untoward seems to happen when I deny authorization, but why on Earth would it need to become a server in the first place? AdAware and PestPatrol find no lurking Trojans or anything.

Are you on a network, or are you using Explorer to access anything on the Internet? Explorer has the ability to act as a server and has for some time now, such as connecting to FTP sites on the internet and making file shares available on a network.

I have a cable connection to the Internet (USB modem, not Ethernet); other than that, I'm not on a network. And I don't - ever - use Win Explorer to access the Internet, unless some of my startup programs are trying to use it themselves - hard to tell.

Yes, it may well remain a mystery why the update did this. I would not worry too much about it though, it may be acting as a server to something within the operating system itself. You could always dig into it and research the matter, just to satisfy your curiosity....but I would just shrug myself. <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23>
