Excel file can't be opened after copying to new lo (XP SP-1)

    Hello,

The screenshot shows the error message I'm getting when I copy/move an Excel file from one folder to another.

It came by email in a Zipped archive- when I unzip that archive and try to open the Excel file there, it's Ok.

But if I copy the same excel file to another folder on my Desktop & try to open it from there, I get this error.

Pls. help me solve this problem. Thanks!!

How are you trying to "open" it?

Are you using exel MRU or windows MRU list? (these probably won;t work) Or do you go to the folder and dbl-click it (this should work).

The maximum size for a full path that can be handled by various Windows functions is around 260 characters. Although you made most of the message box unreadable, the path looks very long. It may well exceed 260 characters in length.

I am opening the file from a folder on the desktop.

I used WinRar to make the Zip file, but the recipient used WinZip.
He changed the files & sent them back to me & I used WinRar to unzip them.

There could be some issue below the surface in incompatibility between these 2 utilities that is causing this problem.

It's really bizarre cos when I rename the folder in which the Excel file is saved to a long name, the same error comes up!

Try opening the file and then - using File|Save As - save it to your location of choice. THEN try to reopen it.

    Problem seems to be fixed.
Not sure if a reboot helped it go away.

    Thanks.
