ZoneAlarm Notices!

Twice so far this morning, I've gotten on-screen notices that ZoneAlarm has an important security update available - 4.5.538 - but when I click on the button to allow it to update, NOTHING happens. After the second time, I went looking at their web site and sure 'nuff, there is a dot-538 version available. I sure wish they'd FIX their update process.....

    ZoneAlarm 4.5.538 Free

You could always use a different firewall that you can rely on.....

Sorry, I had to get my daily dig at ZA in there!

    Hi Al!

I had no trouble at all - I just clicked on your link and got 4.8 MB downloaded in seconds!

Then I read your message again and noticed it was the "free" version, not Pro...

    Re: ZoneAlarm Notices!

    Al,

I have to agree with you ,so far as the updater is concerned. I had ver 4.5.530 ( not 538 ) so I clicked on the update tab inside ZA and it said everything was "up to date in Kansas City" as the old song went. Yet when I went to their site, there was 4.5.538 available to DL.!!!
Now I realize that an update from 530 to 538 is probably a MINOR update, but when is an update NOT an update? Either it is or it isn't, NO?

    Re: ZoneAlarm Notices!

You're right, Bob. I forgot to mention that I did what you did, that is, went into the software and had IT check for updates and it said I'm up to date - liar, liar, pants on fire! But my original point was that if a window pops open telling me there is an update, and that window offers me a button for installing and a button for reminding me later, and if I choose the button to install, I would expect the thing to do the install..... Well, as WyllyWylly would say "you gets what you pays fer..."

    Bob

This is what ZoneLabs says about the latest update...

New and improved features in ZoneAlarm Pro version 4.5.538.0 [19 December; previous version was 530.0 on 18 November - JG]

Added a manual check for update option
Fixed compatibility issues with 3rd party vendors
Various other enhancements for increased reliability of operation

It seems to be "an update", but not a major one....!

    And Al:

Would you support a Software Firewall Lounge forum? The ZoneLabs Tech Support offers an entirely useless "automated mechanism", presumably what used to be called an "expert system" about ten years ago. It can't answer the simplest question (viz. mine...!)

Those are the words that always make me a little nervous. It leaves me wondering exactly what changes they made and what is more reliable! I make no secret of my dislike for ZoneAlarm but many vendors do this. Whatever happened to change logs?

    Mark,

It sure is a rather vague statement, for sure, but just what is your major objection to ZA besides being free and it works?

    Re: ZoneAlarm Notices!

ZoneAlarm in its free version is really good in its own right, but I have had enough bad experiences with it that I will be hard pressed to ever try it again. Some people never have problems with it, and there is a reason that it is consistently popular. Perhaps my needs are different. No, scratch that, I am sure that they are.

    My objections to ZA:

Random blue screens caused by the low level driver on various systems

Lack of support for advanced rules

Lack of intrusion detection

Machines cannot be tracked across multiple networks/dynamic IPs

Limited actions upon an event trigger

Does not protect against as many types intrusions

The cluttered user interface

The animated GIF problem[/list]There are a lot of free products out there, Sygate included (my personal preference). I could never abide by the strange problems that I had with ZoneAlarm on various machines, sometimes stopping TCP/IP traffic even when disabled, the blue screens, and the inability to create advanced rules. In over a year and a half of using Sygate's product, I have never had the number of problems that I had with ZoneAlarm.

    Re: ZoneAlarm Notices!

Two things about this, one of which is probably moot. The pop-open on my screen window said it was for a SECURITY update, which is the modern day attention getter. But what you found doesn't look at all like security, does it?

I guess my take on a new forum would be similar to other opinions on similar matters - I don't think we need a firewall forum since the software board seems to take care of its coverage well enough. Unlike Mark, other than this update quirk, I've not had a single problem with the free ZA -

I think firewall discussions fit nicely with the networking board already. And here, of course.

Ok. I guess that answers that question. Not everything works for every person, but I don't think I've heard of someone having that much trouble with ZA as you state. No wonder you have a distaste for it!
As Al said, it works for me too. it seems to me I tried Sygates firewall ( maybe when it first came out ) and I found it to be "clunky". I suppose they have changed it some since it's first release?

    Re: ZoneAlarm Notices!

Yes, the interface is a little clunky, and it lacks some other things that ZoneAlarm has. I would not recommend it to a casual user, it seems more targeted at those who want control as opposed to having the software just do its thing quietly in the background.

ZoneAlarm may well have improved in stability since the time that I used it regularly, but now that I have found a product that has been stable and does exactly what I want, I have no need to look at it again, either. Not for the present anyway! My problems with stability were related to several installations and trying to manage them. I grew to dislike McAfee for much the same reason, it seemed to be a problem child no matter how nicely I spoke to it - but for others, it was something to swear by. Variety is the spice of life, yes?

Well I'm TOTALLY with you when you get into the area of that McAfee subject. ( shudder )
