wireless connects to hub but not internet

I have a Linksys USB wireless NIC that is connecting to the access point, but for some reason it never connects to the internet. I've double-checked all of the settings and even reinstalled the software and drivers, but still nothing. I can see the PC in the network neighborhood too, but no internet. It's running W98se; I've even closed ZoneAlarm all-together.

What would cause it to not connect? <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15> I have a laptop that connects via wireless fine to the Linksys router.

Try removing ZoneAlarm completely and see if you can access the Internet. This is one of the problems I have had in the past with that product. If that does nothing for you then it will be time to check network settings. In fact, check now: do you have DHCP enabled?

What's strange is that when I changed the router to only 64 bit, it now works. I try changing both to 128 bit and it finds the router, but can't connect to the internet. I wonder why that would be?

What did you change to 64-bit? The level of encryption? This sounds like a deep dig into the documentation along with a healthy dose of experimentation (and hair loss) if you want to get to the bottom of it. Just make sure that you are using some form of encryption on the wireless connection to protect your 1s and 0s!

i changed the router's encryption level to 64-bit vs. 128-bit. The instructions did say that 128 was best, but even was a slower connection due to the level of encryption. It's just strange that it wouldn't even connect to the internet with the higher level even though it connected to the router. I wonder if it has something to do with the OS being only W98SE?

I guess as long as it's connected and encrypted as apposed to wide open...

I'm currently running 6.x on it.

I think I'll stay with what works for now I guess.

    Thanks!

Maybe not Windows 98 itself, but perhaps the version of Internet Explorer. Which version are you running? I believe only IE 5.5 and higher have 128 bit encryption as part of the package. Regardless you may want to visit the IE download page and check out the downloadable encryption packs. You may want to try re-installing IE or updating to the latest version, which is currently 6.0 SP1.

Better than wide open, yes, but the more bits the better!

When I was in contact with a Netgear tech support guy he told me that 128 bit encription was not compatible with the internet. I had to do the same, use 64 bit encription to get to the internet. I know there are places that the internet use 128, perhaps the problem is in the router, even tho the 128 option is offered.

Interesting. I connect twice a week to another network with my laptop and it's on 128 bit and it works fine. Although I put in the WEP manually for that location.

I wonder if that's it, that it needs the code manually for 128, but can use the passphrase for lower incryption.
