General Web development question (2002 sp2)

Hope this question is not out of line for this forum. I am getting back to technical work after time in IT sales and management. FrontPage seems inadequate for developing sophisticated sites. For instance, For instance, I cannot find a way in FrontPage to make menus on Web pages. This seems a pretty standard feature of Web pages these days.

Can anyone recommend a more comprehensive tool or tools for Web development? I would like the tool(s) to support e-commerce as well as dynamic database access.

    Thanks for any help here.

FrontPage is certainly capable of what you want to do, but it is also tightly married to Windows and Internet Explorer. I much prefer Macromedia's DreamWeaver MX for website development, because it does not use proprietary extensions like FrontPage and is quite powerful. There are also several add-in modules that you can download for that add this kind of functionality. It is definitely worth checking out!

You might also consider dropping by the Web Design, Coding and Scripting board for more general information that is not limited to FrontPage - particularly if you decide to use DreamWeaver or any other application.

A final reference I can make is for the LockerGnome Webmaster Weekly newsletter, and the online archives. There is a lot of valuable information in that newsletter and it too is .

Yes, this is not the "anything but FrontPage" forum.

Macromedia has the lead in market share and developer mindshare with Dreamweaver. There are many other products, and each has its adherents, but you can count on having a lot of support available for Dreamweaver, as you would with FrontPage and Adobe's product (GoLive?). More obscure and specialized products might give you the shopping cart of your dreams, but you also could end up with a smaller community, fewer books, and (should the worst come to pass) a less marketable resume.
