IE download (IE 5.5)

I would like to know where I can down the complete copy of IE 5.5 (or higher). The one from Microsoft is the setup.exe only. I need the complete program so that I can fix my IE program (it cannot go to the net at all).

    Thanks

I appreciate your point Bob--of course not on that machine and it can be a pain. I've been in the position of not being able to get on the net with anything I had a couple times, . If you can pull into a Barnes and Noble, Starbucks you can usually find someone who'll help out if not next store. I had to put some files together and needed an XP machine and got someone to loan me one to get what I needed. But as Dave says, he's getting to the Lounge so hopefully he could download and burn or copy to an old time floppy.

In addition to the Evolt.org website, you can also force Internet Explorer to download only, as documented in article 257249 on the Microsoft website.

(Edited by DaveA on 23-Dec-03 09:25. )
He needs to be able to download on one machine, copy to another. He is POSTING here, so I think he can get on the internet, just NOT with the machine that needs version 5.5.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: IE download (IE 5.5)

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all the hints. Yes, one of my machines' IE is corrupted. The stupid thing that I did was to upgrade to IE6. When I tried to fix with with the IE 5.5 download as you folks suggested, it would not work because IE could only move forward. IE5.5

I would not necessarily say that it was stupid, because IE is so integrated into Windows that if you do not have the most current revision, you are opening yourself up to security exploits. It is quite possibly the most insecure browser of all time, thanks in no small part to its deep integration with other Microsoft based software. A hole in IE means a hole in Outlook, for example. By making it so pervasive in the Windows platform Microsoft has reduced many of their products' security.

In the interest of full disclosure I will say that of late I have been openly evangelizing alternatives to IE for web browsing (particularly Firebird). Regular Loungers will notice this, I am sure! I strongly recommend Mozilla Firebird, or the full Mozilla suite. Opera is also a very nice browser but the free version has an annoyingly large ad bar. Both are much better options than IE, and render pages faster. My sixty-plus father, who knows next to nothing about the technology side of his computer, has noticed the difference.

There are good points and bad points alike in switching; since the entire world uses IE out of convenience most web developers never bother to test their sites with anything other than IE. Even with that caveat in mind, I would say that 98.5% of the websites out there render just fine and have few to no issues. IE only recently got pop-up control as part of its default setup, and that will not be available until Windows XP Service Pack 2 is released sometime in 2004. Both Mozilla and Opera feature excellent popup control already, along with many additional features that make surfing the web fun instead of an exercise in frustration.

Something to consider...you will always need to keep current with Internet Explorer, but no one said you had to use it.

    Re: IE download (IE 5.5)

    Amen!

I will crawl out of the woodwork and confess to the fact that IE has never been my primary browser. That doesn't go to say that I have not used (and continue to thoroughly use) IE daily. Persevere I will where most will walk away, but putting up with frustration - where there is a high quality workaround - has never been one of my strengths. OTOH in many office environments not using IE causes unneeded friction.

Some minor additions on day-to-day points.

The rendering of Microsoft's website on non-IE browsers is now more or less workable. OTOH I continue to recommend using IE for for any extended MS site browsing.

The choice of default browser is something to weigh up carefully. On older systems, sticking to IE tends to save hassle. With WinXP, however, I can safely say that setting Mozilla Firebird as the default browser has been basically problem-free.
