    Embedded Word document (Excel 2000)

We have a COM addin that handles both Excel and Word events such as New and Open. On a Excel document that has an embeddedWord document, when the document is selected the Word Open event is fired and it looks for a menu command bar which there isn't and an error is generated. Is there a way to detect that the object is an Embedded Word document so as to condition around the menu creation code or is there a way to detect that no menu exists?

Hi Jim. Your add in sounds like a document management package. If so, the creators of that package should have an option within the administration end of it to enable "compatible" or "supervisor" applications. That may help, but without more information (and possibly even with more info) it's hard to tell.

Is Word already open when the Excel file is opened? If so, then it sounds as if the embedded object is creating an additional instance of Word which may cause you issues with your normal.dot.

Thank you. Yes the Addin does perform like a document management tool but I am not sure what you are referring to about the option to enable "compatible" or "supervisor", is this some property setting in Word?

Yes the Word document is already opened and the embedded Excel worksheet appears in it and when the Excel sheet is clicked is when the error occurs

Much of this is handled in the administrative end of the document management package. You will likely need to deal directly with that vendor. Hummingbird DocsOpen (a DMS package) has numerous administrative options which include opening additional instances of an application using a command line switch, or designating that Word and Excel are "compatible." Many DMS packages (including Docs) have issues specifically with Excel because MS still has not made it ODMA (Open Document Management API) compliant.

Sorry to ramble, but I'm thinking the problem is probably with the add-in and not Word or Excel.

Re: Embedded Word document (Excel 2000)

One solution I found for telling if an Excel Worksheet is an embedded worksheet in Word is to check to see if the Application.Visible of Excel is visible. If it is False then it is an embedded Worksheet and if True then it is a regular visible Workbook instance.
