    Help - big boo-boo (Office/Outlook XP)

    Hi-
Really making things hard for myself.

Accidentally deleted my .PST file. Made the mistake of running outlook prior to restoring from a recent backup, so I created a new pst without any data in it execpt a couple of emails, then OPENED a backup pst file, giving me two sets of PERSONAL FOLDERS...since only the recently created and empty one had Outlook Today in it, I tried to rename the backup Personal Folders to Outlook Today...then when I realized I couldn't just close or delete the "real" one, I tried moving all the data to the "real" one and then delete the "new" one...but Outlook won't let me delete it...error message that "command cannot be completed. an object cannot be found" and I can no longer click the advanced tab and change the name back to personal folder (I get the same error message).

Now, now matter what outlook pst file I open, I get the same "new" Outlook today tree of folders opening as well.

Very frustrating...I've tried moving the files all over etc...but no matter what I open, I get this undeletable folder tree added to my foler list.

Anyone have any Idea how to fix this???

Many many thanks if you do...

    Tom O'Connell

First, is there any possibility that your latest PST is in the Recylcle Bin? Would be convenient...

As long as you have the physical files, issues with "naming" can be overcome. Close up Outlook, and rename all the existing PSTs with distinctive names so that it will be clear what they are. Then use the Mail control panel to add those PSTs to your profile and clear out the remnants of the others. You have an opportunity here to change the "friendly names" from Personal Folders to something more useful.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip on renaming...I don't know how I did it before but that seems to be what screwed up.

I assume the Mail Control box is the File, Data management box? I can get that box to add the pst file but it does not stay added and will not delete or close no matter what.

the exact error message is: The operation failed. An object cannot be found.

When I move or rename it, then the error is: that the file cannot be found at the path of the original.

any other thoughts other than reinstalling Outlook?

    thanks again,

    tom

You must have Outlook closed in order to rename the files. Close Outlook and navigate to the folder containing the .pst files in Windows Explorer, and follow Jschers instructions. Then go to Control Panel>Mail to manipulate the renamed files.

    good luck

Thanks, Kip. The control panel dialog seems to be the same as the Data Maintenance under File in outlook.

My problem is there is a .pst file that I cannot remove, close or rename without getting an error message. I opened it and renamed it (probably incorrectly, I guess) and now it will not let itself be removed from my folder list. Even if I delete it, the folder appears and when I click on it, it shows that there is no data, or that the file was moved etc.

I tried getting out the Office CD and doing an Office repair, but that didn't do anything. I'm thinking I'll either have to live with this minor but persistant annoyance or reinstall outlook?

    thanks,

    tom

How about trying to import your PST contects into OE? Provided that OE is prepared to recognise the contents of the PST <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>, then you should be able to reimport tham into a new PST.

You might have to set up a new profile. Sometimes profiles get corrupted and there's no other way around it. In the Mail control panel, the third option allows you to do this. Then load that profile's account and data file settings, re-enter your account information and re-connect to your data files.

Certain settings associated with your old profile, such as the shortcuts on your Outlook bar, and the resolved names (nicknames/NK2) file, won't carry over. You might be able to fool Outlook by renaming those files, but I'm not sure that works. They live in this folder and have the same names as the name of your profile (typically something like "Outlook" or "MSExchange"):

    Cocuments and Settings<username>Application DataMicrosoftOutlook

After creating and setting up your new profile, make it the default and restart Outlook. Hope this fixes it!!

    You're still the CHAMP!!!

many thanks...creating a new profile is not something that mere mortals would instinctively do <g>, the only hard part was putting all the right settings back for 6 email accounts (think I should pare that down <g>)

Seriously, you are a life saver...that was one of those little things that can make us compulsive crazy...thanks...thanks.

    Happy Holidays,

    Re: Help - big boo-boo (Office/Outlook XP)

This happened to me as well. I deleted the pst files before I cleaned up my folder list. Outlook is so stubborn that it won't let you delete a folder pst entry if it can't first 'see' it. I solved this in a round-about way: I created a backup of a small PST file (an archive file works just as well). Then I restarted OL and when it complained it could not find the pst file (the one you want to delete) and displays the dialog box so it could find the file - I pointed OL to the pst I just created. OL was now happy and I rewarded it by deleting the folder entry that I did not want. Then to make sure there was no future confusion, I deleted the makeshift pst file itself.

    Re: Help - big boo-boo (Office/Outlook XP)

oops...now I have a new issue (I can't believe I did this)...I have some (but not all) contacts showing duplicates in the address book dialog box that are not duplicated in Contacts and I now cannot add a contact and then find it in the address book.

I have deleted all the old .pst files, so I can't even figure out where the extra entries are being stored?????

    sorry to belabor this issue.

Open the Address Book dialog (Tools>Address Book) and use its Options dialog (Tools>Options) to sort out what contacts folders or personal address books you've got referenced. You might need to right-click your Contacts folder and enable it for the Outlook Address Book (Properties>Outlook Address Book tab) before it will appear as an option in the Address Book dialog.

    Re: Help - big boo-boo (Office/Outlook XP)

That's the weird part...shows nothing but Outlook Address book (shows no addresses in this address book) and Contact which looks totally correct.

Should the "outlook address book" item not be there? is there a way to delete it?

    thanks again,

    tom
