How to draw 3d shape? (2003)

    Hello,

The screenshot shows a diagram I came across in a PDF.
My Q. is: how can I draw something like that?

    Thanks in advance.

I would say use Corel Draw and use extrusion but I am assuming you don't want to hear that. Corel has tools which make this type of graphic pretty easy.

It can be drawn in Visio but it is a slow process. You need to decide whether you want to use vanishing points for perspective or just work in the isometric way that your example uses. Start the bottom circle with an ellipse and then duplicate it to get the top and bottom surfaces (you cant see the bottom surface. Then zoom in and add a polygon which joins the outside edges and use the operations (weld, trim etc) to give you the outside curve. Duplicate the basic ellipse to start work on the next level. Duplicate it again and shrink it to get the core shape. Add polygons to trim out the gaps in the upper disk shape. Once you have one level, follow the same process to get the extrusion as you used on the bottom circle.

You can use partial transparency on the fills but you need to place objects behind if you want it to show correctly.

    Cheers.

I do have PSP, so I searched it's Help file for the keyword "extrusion" but nothing came up.

Do you know if this can be done with PSP & how?

    Thanks.

You won't be able to do this with Paint Shop Pro. You will need a vector based drawing package. Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw and Macromedia Freehand are the three big (2-dimensional) contenders although any good 3D program will give you the basic structure pretty quickly. I don't use 3D software so I can't comment on which one would be best there.

It is still possible to do in Visio but it isn't particularly quick. I would estimate that if you knew what you were doing, you could create that graphic in Corel Draw in about 30 minutes but doing the same would take about an hour in Visio. If you don't know what you are doing it will take considerably longer.

You will need an artistic eye to create something like this from scratch but once someone has done it for you (eg your example), it is simple enough to copy. You will need to understand the Shape > Operations options to do it in Visio. Once you understand how they work the job becomes more obvious on how you perform the task.
