Get Computer Name (VB 6 / Access 2000)

Is there a way to find out a persons computer name? Based on this, I would like to load a specific switchboard.

    Thanks

Do you really mean the name of the computer? If so, see this tip.
If you want the Windows login name of the user, see this tip.
Both are on Dev Ashish's Access Web (on the MVPS.org site.)

The other approach, which is more robust in some respects, is to use Access User Security, and based on the user group login, determine what switchboard to load. With that approach you can also prevent users from doing other tasks, such as switching a form to design mode, creating new queries, etc. As you've discovered, one of the shortcomings of Access is to be able to create customized menus based on the user - unfortunately, writing VBA to do what you suggest means it will require code that contains a list of the various usernames, or alternatively building a table to look things up, which requires replicating much of the feature/function of User Security. We actually have built a menuing system that lets you alter the menu based on the Access UserName and GroupName. Post back if that's of interest to you.

Also, based on the fact that this appears to be an Access specific problem, I'm moving this thread to the Access forum where others are more likely to see it.

If it is not of interest to the original poster, I DEFINITELY am. Thanks

We are still in the testing and debugging phase for a couple of the versions of Access, but stay tuned - I'll update this thread once we feel it's solid.
