Re: Super Search Tip! Windows XP (all) with TweakU

As you probably now, there is a Mozilla Firebird search sidebar extension here. There is also the keyword feature. On each bookmark, you can set up a mnemonic which - when typed in the Firebird address bar, will take you to that bookmark. (It does not support the %s switch.) Otherwise that keyword will create a search in Google. HTH

It is a close one, to be sure. I cannot reasonably expect Moz to ever support the windows command line, nor do I necessarily think it should.

With Firebird/Mozilla set to the default, using the shortcuts I mentioned in the address bar (which I have on my taskbar) open in the browser's current tab. I think it may be a matter of me learning new ways! I do like this utility's default to Google, but again - I search Google using very specific strings to narrow my results, so I will have to look into this a little further to see if it can work in similar fashion.

This is the kind of thing that the text substitution feature in ActiveWords might be able to help you with. AW is something that I have run periodically for a number of years - and is a semi-commandline tool; originally based on a strong recommendation from Lockergnome.

Super Search Tip! Windows XP (all) with TweakUI

Edited by <!profile=WyllyWylly>WyllyWylly<!/profile> on 12/27/2003 to add additional search strings...

I was going to add this to an existing thread, but I think it deserves its own home because it is so different and will likely spawn many more questions/ideas. What am I talking about?

There is a feature in TweakUI for Windows XP that allows you to create quick search handlers. I LOVE this feature and I wish Mozilla fully supported it (I have not yet gotten irritated enough to write a plug-in for Mozilla). I have been using this for a long time now. It works like this: you define a "handler" or shorthand text, and then you type that into the address bar and IE loads with your search already done.

For example, I defined the letter "g" for Google searches. If I want to find something, I enter g "Windows ipconfig" and up comes the browser with my results. If I want to search the KB for a specific article that I know the number for, I enter mskb 123456 and I go straight to the page. I also have a handler defined for Dictionary.com, so I can enter dic {word to search for} and I get the definition in two seconds or so. Below is a table that includes the handlers I have defined. I have also attached a screen shot of the TweakUI page that allows you to do this.

To discover new search strings, search your favourite site and look at the location/address bar and see where your search terms wind up. Copy the URL, and replace your search keywords with %s. After you define the handler(s), any time you use your shortcut in the Address bar or in Internet Explorer your search comes back with minimal effort.

Here are my favourite search strings:

    <table border=2><td>Search Site</td><td>My TweakUI prefix</td><td>URI string (handler)</td><td>Google</td><td>g</td><td>http://www.google.com/search?as_q=%s</td><td>Dictionary.com</td><td>dic</td><td>http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=%s</td><td>KnowledgeBase</td><td>mskb</td><td>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=%s</td><td>Use Google to search the KB</td><td>gkb</td><td>google.com/search?as_q=%s+site:support.microsoft.com</td><td>Wikipedia</td><td>wik</td><td>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s</td><td>CIAC Internet Hoax Search</td><td>hoax</td><td>http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/cgi-bin/webgli.../archive?query=%s</td><td>Snopes.com Urban Myths</td><td>snopes</td><td>http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=%s</td><td>VMyths.com Virus Hoaxes</td><td>vmyths</td><td>http://www.vmyths.com/search3.cfm?id=%s</td></table>

Thoughts, comments? I would dearly like to hear interesting search strings that could be implemented using this little known feature!

Re: Super Search Tip! Windows XP (all) with TweakUI

I love the search handles - particularly with the address tool bar on my start menu-task bar in windows. I don't suppose you've come up with a string that will allow me to search the lounge? The exsact call is hidden from my ie address bar when I use the lounge search ...

    Does this work?

    http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/dosearch.p...osts&Words=%s

This will search all forums, which may not be desirable. To search a specific forum, you'd have to replace All_Forums by the abbreviation for that forum, for example acc for Access and xl for Excel. You can see these abbreviations in the status bar as you mouse over a forum in the Main Index.

I've been using this feature since IE4 when the QuickSearch Power Toy was first released. Here are my additions:

    IMDB Search: http://www.imdb.com/find?q=%s
    Dictionary Search: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=%s

Some time ago, I was given a list of valid search terms for the Lounge (thanks Claude!). The search.pl script parses the following terms:
    <UL>words
    forum
cat[/list]The search engine uses the internal board name which is case sensitive. Here is a table for your reference:

    <table border=1><td>Board Name</td><td>Internal Name</td><td>Board Name</td><td>Internal Name</td><td>Access</td><td>acc</td><td>Excel</td><td>xl</td><td>Frontpage</td><td>front</td><td>General Office Solutions</td><td>off</td><td>Internet Explorer</td><td>ie</td><td>Lounge Matters</td><td>lounge</td><td>Other Browsers & Email Clients</td><td>net</td><td>Other OSes - Palm / Linux</td><td>palm</td><td>Outlook Express</td><td>oe</td><td>Outlook</td><td>out</td><td>Photodraw</td><td>photo</td><td>Powerpoint</td><td>ppt</td><td>Project</td><td>proj</td><td>Publisher</td><td>pub</td><td>Scuttlebutt</td><td>scut</td><td>Software Finds and Wants</td><td>free</td><td>Test Area</td><td>test</td><td>VB/VBA</td><td>vb</td><td>Web Design, Coding and Scripting</td><td>htm</td><td>Windows XP</td><td>xp</td><td>Windows 2000</td><td>2000</td><td>Windows ME</td><td>me</td><td>Windows 98</td><td>98</td><td>Windows 95</td><td>95</td><td>Windows NT</td><td>nt</td><td>Windows CE</td><td>CE</td><td>Word</td><td>wrd</td><td>WOPR Peer to Peer</td><td>wopr</td><td>Words From on High</td><td>ann</td><td> </td><td> </td></table>

Sounds interesting. How would you search for a string. Eg, what would I enter if I wanted to google:

If you followed the steps above, all you would need to enter is g existentialism "Woody's Lounge" and IE/Google will handle the rest. The %s operator is replaced with your query words.

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Gfamily on 09-Sep-06 12:35. To include registry information)</P>Now that is a TweakUI feature I can see using! <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

We've been asked to share some - here are a couple:-
As well as the standard Google Search, I've added one that goes straight to the "I'm feeling lucky" result
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%...m+Feeling+Lucky

Also froogle (that's froogle UK of course)
    http://froogle.google.co.uk/froogle?q=%s+&hl=en

    I like it, I like it! <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

If you want to share your search prefixes, you can export them from the registry and import them into other machines (usual registry caveats apply)
They can be found at . . .
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchUrl
