    Outlook 2003 (MSO 2K)

If I get Outlook 2003, will it work alright with the other 'pieces' if I keep them in Office 2000?

    Regards,

It should: as long as you install only its "pieces". You may wish to run the Install Wizard and see whether it can offer to Upgrade your Outlook 2K on its own - before you look at uninstalling Outlook 2K.

Good idea... are the pst files backward compatible?

The PST files are forward compatible from 2K to 2003. (I think that's what you were asking about!)

But are they backward-compatible... in case I "change my mind..."?

    Re: Outlook 2003 (MSO 2K)

In practice, the answer is "yes". What you would have to do is to migrate your data backwards. That is, create a new PST inside Outlook 2003 in the old format, and then drag and drop your data from your new Outlook 2003 PST back into the new old format PST. More details are in <!mskb=830336>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 830336<!/mskb>.

On a practical note, it may be the case that, if you keep using an old format PST file in 2003 - and don't go above 2GB in size - you might be able to simply swap the file back into 2K. I did achieve something like that when amalgamating files, but receiving lrge quantities of new mail into the file may change the situation. As usual, back up your data before you experiment!
