    Can't Remove Icon (W2003/WinXPHome)

I tried to download Microsoft Reader but couldn't get it to run properly so removed it via the control panel. It put an icon on the Word File menu & on the standard toolbar & no matter how often I remove them on next Word restart they are back. What do I need to purge from my system to stop this icon infestation??

The installer probably added a template to your Word Startup folder. To check that first, close Word, then drill down through the following path and see whether you can spot the rogue template here:

    Cocuments and Settingsyour_usernameApplication DataMicrosoftWordSTARTUP

If none appear to be related to the reader, you can temporarily move them all out and gradually re-introduce them until you discover which one it is. Or, follow the steps in this post:

There might be some differences in Office 2003 that Phil couldn't foresee, but the overall approach should remain valid.

Thanks for your interest & help - & on Christmas day too.

There was nothing in my startup folder. My normal.dot is complex & dear to my heart I don't want to have to rebuild it so my next option is to reinstall Microsoft Reader & if it still doesn't run re-un-install it & see if that helps.

I went through the install/uninstall cycle with MS Reader & it made no difference the icons are still there.

Any other suggestions which don't involve me rebuilding normal.dot would be welcome

I had a look on a PC where I have Acrobat installed. The file PDFMAKER.DOT was in the folder

Was it the file wordRMR.exe that you ran - the add-in that enable you to create Micosoft e-books from Word documents?
This program adds a COM add-in which appears not to have been properly removed when you uninstalled it. To remove the COM add-in do the following (taken from Office help file)

    1. If you have already added the COM Add-Ins command to the Tools menu, skip to Step 6.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
    3. In the Categories box, click Tools.
    4. Drag COM Add-Ins from the Commands box over the Tools menu. When the Tools menu displays the menu commands, point to the location where you want the COM Add-Ins command to appear on the menu, and then release the mouse button.
    5. Click Close.
    6. On the Tools menu, click COM Add-Ins and do any of the following:
    * To load an add-in, select the check box next to the add-in name in the Add-Ins available list. If the add-in you want isn't in the Add-Ins available list, click Add, locate the add-in, and then click OK.

    * To unload an add-in from memory but keep its name in the list, clear the check box next to the add-in name.

    * To remove an add-in from the list and also from the list of registered add-ins in the registry file, select its name, and then click Remove.

Note: Unloading or removing an add-in doesn't remove it from your computer.

(For info Microsoft Reader can be installed on systems running Office 2003 & will not update Word. The add-in to create Microsoft Reader e-books from Word is not compatible with Word 2003)

Thanks, Tony. It would be nice to have a "master list" of how different program integrate so we can shortcut the discovery process. It could never be completely comprehensive or up-to-date, but still might be worth doing.
