Immediate shut down, errrors (XP Pro SP 1)

When I go to certain web sites, my system shuts down with no warning.
I want to know is there some error log , etc... that I can read to determine what problem caused my system to shut down?

    Thanks <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Yes, there are logs. Check the Event Viewer (Start - Run - eventvwr.msc) and look under the System section for errors. You can filter out information events and view only warnings and errors by clicking on the View - Filter menu option.

Internet Explorer, right? I've had this happen on rare occasions. Sometimes it appears related to Print Preview and bad style sheets, other times it's when I close a page and then later close a security prompt associated with that page. Those are repeatable when they happen, but other times I think I "moved too fast" for IE, switching the focus from one thing to another, and those are hard to debug. Slowing down usually helps. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Now... one thing you need to know is that pages containing Java applets require a "virtual machine" in order to display properly. If you are having problems with pages that use Java applets, you can try Sun's JRE (Java Runtime Engine) or find a link to Microsoft's last MVM (MIcrosoft Virtual Machine), which I think is no longer supported but probably still works for most sites.

Those were both helpful posts and I notice some of what Jefferson has seen also. Sometimes I'll get an error that the shell stopped unexpectedly and sometimes nothing in Event Viewer. Besides the answers to Mark's questions and chkdsk try running System File Checker and see if that's helpful.

Start>Run>Cmd>Type in "sfc /scannow">and prior put in your XP CD because it may want it to pull files. You may or may not have to hit a retry button on a box to get the progress bar to finish. You'll have to go to Event Viewer to get notice you finished it--no box will show you. Look under Windows File Protection. Avg. time 25-40 min. depending. Everyone's a little bit different.
