    Font Problem

After a complete overhaul, I have just done a clean install of Windows ME on an old 300Mhz Pentium. Everything is OK except that I have a minor but frustrating font problem.

On opening the Media Player, the text on the buttons does not appear, replaced by square boxes. Similarly in PageMaker, the title bar text in the Adobe-style dialog boxes is square boxes, as is the text reporting the progress in the splash screen. I haven't found this affecting other programs so far, but...

Perhaps connected, if I open the raster fonts from the Control Panel or using Fontview, most do not display completely--square boxes replace the display in the larger sizes (MS Serif) or all sizes (Courier, etc.). Only MS Sans Serif displays normally--except that it doesn't show the details of the producer. I have tried reinstalling these fonts from the CD, but this does not make any difference. If I copy the fonts to another computer (running XP), Fontview shows them normally.

    Any ideas?

    Chris

    Re: Font Problem

Are all of the Window controls not looking as they should? From your description, it sounds as though there is a problem in the font plumbing within Windows, but it could be something else masquerading as a font problem.

The font that allows for display of menu controls and other Windows widgets is called Marlett. Try reinstalling that font to see if it corrects one of the items you describe.

Other things to consider: your video driver may need updating, and you may also want to run a full scandisk on the system drive.

    Re: Font Problem

    Thanks for your swift response.

No, it seems only to affect the 'skin' of the Media Player, and the dialog boxes in PageMaker that do not use the Windows API.

I'll have a go at reinstalling Martlett when I can access the computer.

Everything was OK with the same video driver before the clean reinstall, so I doubt the video driver, but I'll follow this one up too.

Scandisk done but no problems found, no change in the problem..

    Again, thanks for your ideas.
