Normal.dot (Word 97 to Word 2000)

Does anyone know if you can move your normal.dot from Word 97 to Word 2000. I have a number of customizations in WORD 97 that I would hate to have to redo. As well, can you move your Autotext and Autocorrect entries. I would certainly hate to recreate those. If so, what files do I need to look for? TIA.

    Re: Normal.dot (Word 97 to Word 2000)

    Hi Ron:

I replaced my Word 97 normal.dot at work with my Word 2000 normal.dot from home, so I can't see why the reverse isn't possible.

I would imagine that there are some differences in AutoText entries, but I haven't made a comparison. Don't forget, you can just rename your Word 2000 template to 2Knormal.dot. And Word will always recreate normal.dot if you need, so it can't hurt to try.

The AutoCorrect entries are another matter. First, they are contained in a file with extension .acl. There will be a default one & a <username>.acl. Note that you will gain & lose. You gain your customizations. But Word has added some AutoCorrect entries that won't be included in your old file.

In addition, make sure you make copies of all your customized templates & move them into the new templates folder. That's where AutoText, styles, toolbars, & macros are kept.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Ron,

As Phil said, you can just replace your 2000 Normal.dot with the one from 97.

For your AutoCorrect entries, there is a utility found in Macros?.dot, however it will not accommodate all entries. Dave Rado, MS Word MVP wrote a new version that is available for download at this link:

Thanks folks. Looks like there might be hope for Microsoft yet.

    Re: Normal.dot (Word 97 to Word 2000) - Success

Thanks folks. I was able to successfully replace the W2K normal.dot with my old one and everything seems to work so far. The one thing they don't tell you is that it is hidden about five subfolders deep in a hidden subfolder and is not stored with the "templates" in the usual place. Just when I thought MS was beginning to get it!
