Which firewall? [hides...]

OK, it has to be asked.

My Norton AntiVirus 2003 updates expire at the end of February. I have ZoneAlarm Pro in on test, but it seems to be the work of the devil to accept incoming PINGs (heartbeats?) from addresses associated with my broadband ISP BUT not log them. Leave that aside.

When I renew, I suppose I could simply upgrade to Norton AntiVirus 2004.

BUT I could go for the Norton Firewall as well, which would cost little extra if packaged in as Norton Internet Security 2004 (note, I don't get ANY spam at home , and don't need all the other programs in the package)

Advantages: cheaper than ZA Pro; more integrated since both from Symantec

Disadvantages: have never used Norton Firewall; XP SP2's ICF might do much of what any other software firewall does now (?? await comments from SMBP, among others!!)

Would anyone like to proffer advice/rude comments about which course of action they would suggest?

Thanks!

I am running Nav 2004 and ZoneAlarm version and all works well. Do NOT downlaod the Nav 2004, watch for the sales and get it in box form.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

From what I have heard on the street and what I have read, the new Norton firewall suite is a top notch performer, and intergrates wonderfully with the rest of their products. I have made clear in the past what a fan of Sygate I am, but if I were on the market for something new - this would be it.

John, you ought to at least try Agnitum Outpost. It is somewhat overwhelming at the control you have over incoming and outgoing stuff because it does not self configure anything like ZoneAlarm and will take you a while to configure it, but the free version works great for me. The pro (pay) version might even be better.

Re: Which firewall? [hides...]

I'd second the recommendation for Outpost . But I'd add that it will run "straight out of the box" without the need to configure anything (well... not much). As you point out Mike, it does have an extensive configurability though, for those who wish to use these features. For me, ZoneAlarm was quirky, (relatively) hungry on system resources, and not as reliable/ robust as Outpost.

Having had ZA turn me - put it mildly - I switched to Sygate and have never looked back. Have you thought of real-time anti-Trojan protection?

I never could get it to run right out of the box, although it might have been some impatience on my part, or a conflict with another firewall I had gotten to only partially uninstall. Once you understand it though, it's a pretty nifty piece of work! ZA finally got where it just would not run, install, or uninstall.

I think these symptoms all tend to point to the "quirky" aspects of ZA, often mentioned in the "problem" newsgroups, Mike. I recall that it's essentially 2 distinct (sets of) components and it's the "hidden" part that causes problems with installations and removal. If it's still running hidden it creates all sorts of havoc. It might also explain why Outpost had some problems.

Just had a chance to look at Agnitum Outpost, but am immediately put off by
US price $39.95 (currently $10 discount from $49.95; special Christmas price of $29.95, expires today!)

John,

I think the free one is still available:
Download: v1.0.1817 (OutpostInstall.exe) (2556 KB)

There has always been a pay version, and I think the new version is still in beta. Whether or not a new free version will emerge from this is yet to be seen.

Alan

Just verified - this is the case. Also grab the Outpost Firewall's User Guide.

As I said, I switched to Sygate - which continues to offer a free model - and have found it simple, thorough and flexible.

Alan/Unkamuka

I wasn't so much concerned about the firewall being FREE, just that us chaps in Great Britain were being made to pay through the nose, again, if were to pay in pounds sterling!

Technically, both the firewalls you mention may well be brilliant, and less idiosyncratic than Zone Alarm, but this "human factor" can put you off...

(I actually got a reply, albeit not wildly satisfactory, from Agnitum (UK) within 26 minutes of me sending them a message, which impresses me!)

The Sygate prices are a bit more consistent - basic model GBP 23.02/EUR 32.94/USD 39.95. OTOH all prices are excluding VAT or US Sales Taxes.

>>> As to SP2 I have been asked not to comment on what it actually has in the Lounge, and I honor that request,....

Correction: I believe the request was in reference to SP2 BETA which is quite a different matter. If you are officially privy (at this point in time) to what is actually in SP2 - or the BETA for that matter - you should be aware of the NDA covering it.

Correct. Leif if you see any problem with linking to the MSDN public site that Microsoft is now linking in many places that have nothing to do with the Beta please let me know. My aim there was to allow John to see features--I know John is a fan of Paul Thurrott and he has been covering SP2 Security in Win.net Magazine as well as his sites. I thought I was doing something appropriate there. Anyone of course can acess MSDN's public sites, and many of us use it who aren't subscribers to learn.
