    Reinstall XP? (XP Home)

I upgraded from W98SE to XP Home. Since then, I am encountering a number of annoyances and problems (like continuous disk activity but no processes shown in Task Mgr, out of resources messages when the system runs >8 hours sometimes, etc.). I am wondering if this might be the result of installing XP as an upgrade on top of W98SE rather than a clean install? (I did follow all instructions to clean, defrag, etc, etc before I upgraded.)

Here is my question. I purchased XP Upgrade. If I wanted to format my hard drive and make a clean install, can I even do that with the CD I have? I assume that it only works as an upgrade to W98, which would require me to reinstall W98 and then upgrade. Other than purchasing a full copy of XP, is there any other way I can get a clean install of XP?

You should be able to do a clean install, you just need to insert your Windows 98 CD when the installation asks you to provide proof that you have a previous version.

Thanks. I was worried that I might have to purchase the full (non upgrade) version of XP to do a clean install. Good thing I didn't throw away my W98 CD. I am just debating which is the lesser of two evils - trying to fix the annoyances I have or going through the significant effort to do a clean install. I guess when my frustration level with the annoyances gets a little higher, the decision will be easy.

If you do your planning in advance, the clean install should not be too hard. I have noted before in these forums that I keep a separate partition for the operating system, and the data lives somewhere else. From there, it is simply a matter of applying the customizations you like. If it is the first time you have really dug into it, make a list, keep it in your data partition, and you then have the steps to follow for your next install.

Yes, it is a lot of effort to go through. But it is truly worth the effort, because the OS will be much more responsive than it has been and you have the comfort of knowing that the junk has been cleaned out.

    One additional suggestion...

If you "make a list, keep it in your data partition" then you can also create a desktop shortcut to a change log in a simple text file in your data partition. Every time you make any change you can double click this link and note what you changed. Next time you reinstall you can redo all the changes - unless you want to discard them.

    Now why did I not propose this? <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30> Excellent suggestion!

I know that the preparation for the clean install is the most important part and I feel I know the basics. But I am a little nervous that I might forget something important or do something out of order and cause myself even more problems. Do you know of a good "checklist" I could use to prepare for and perform the clean install?

There's a good initial summary of reinstall points at <post#=325771>post 325771</post#>. Have a look at the rest of the thread as well for some further pointers. HTH
