Ripping problem, CD not recognized (XP Home SR-1)

I have three apps that can rip CD tracks, one of them being Windows Media Player 9.0 with the Nero Plug-in. They used to all work. Even thought they can play CD's, now it seems that for ripping, it's like they don't recognize that there is a disk in the CD player. I can play the CD fine in WMP and in another app, Transkriber, but they can't rip. In WMP, when I right-click on a title, the "Copy to CD or device" is grey-ed out. When I click on the "Copy to CD or Device" button on the left it says "There are no items on the CD or device." With Transkriber it is the same story. I can play tracks, but it no longer rips the tracks. Another app, CD-DA X-Tractor, I just installed to see if this really was a systemic problem. Sure enough, X-Tractor does not even recognize that there is a CD in the drive.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Brad

    Yes--

    1) First thing I'd do is to go to the WMP9 site and just download it again. This sometimes replaces files that are damaged or acts as an on the fly System File Checker of sorts for WMP 9. Simplistic but fixes a lot of WMP problems like this. It's a favorite rememdy of some of the WMP9 and future team developers for fixing all sorts of problems in the MSN WMP groups. Also check in Tools>Options>Copy Music Tab that you have it configured the way you want. Help in WMP9 is good on this and other topics.

    2) See this for any hints if that doesn't work:

The orignal post stated that digital audio extraction does not work for any media player, noy just WMP9. It would seem that the problem has little, if anything, to do with that specific application.

If you open the Device Manager (Start - Run - devmgmt.msc) and expand the entries for your CD drive(s), do they show Dnable digital CD audio for this device? as checked on the Properties tab?

Yes downloading a WMP may do nothing to help any of this but I was lured to suggest it by the graying out in WMP.

I didn't even think of going there and I should have. Good place to check.

    Yes, it is checked.

Tried these, too, and unfortunately, still no go.

I don't know how long ago "used to work" is, but if you have a restore point before it, why not System Restore to try to fix this?

OK, if you are willing, try another test. Use the same CD for all tests, to make sure it is not a problem with the media.

Download Exact Audio Copy and set it up. It can rip using both digital and analog methods. Once configured, perform a test rip of one or two tracks with this application.

I am asking you to try this because I am unfamiliar with the other applications' ability to extract digital audio. Also, EAC is a very powerful tool that gets around a lot of problems within Windows itself. At this point I suspect a codec could be the problem.

Well, I've thought of trying this as a last resort. It's been about three weeks since I last used this feature.

Download Exact Audio Copy and set it up.

This worked! (BTW, the URL is www.exactaudiocopy.de) And there are now new clues.

When I started EAC, the tracks listed in the window. However, when I clicked on the play button, the time position bar moved, but there was no sound. I noticed that the drive was not spinning, either. So I tried to rip the track. Everything looked like it was working--except that the drive was not spinning. What it gave me was a WAV file as big as the original, but played nothing back but silence.

What I did next was go into options, click on the Drive tab, and enable "Spin up drive before extraction." That did the trick. It ripped the file for me.

The same thing seems to be for my other app, Transkriber. It goes through the motions of ripping, but the drive is not spinning. Now is this a codec problem as you also had a thought on that? Actually, that was my first gut reaction, why, I don't know.

I no longer suspect a codec, because if that were the case, drive spin-up would not be an issue. What I now believe is that you have software installed that is interrupting access to the CD drive in some way. Creative makes a utility that purports to extend spin-up and drive access, for example. You stated that you are using the Nero plug-in. What if you removed or reinstalled that component?

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and finally left it uninstalled. No change to WMP or to my other apps.
