Re: Problem Getting Downloads from Kelly's XP (XPP

You did not need to copy out (virtually) the entire script - leaving out only the copyright info. What does that tell anyone? Can you please edit this out.

I cannot reproduce your issue in IE. FYI, however, what you are reporting is what happens with Mozilla Firebird. Perhaps you have changed your security settings elsewhere on you machine?

Looks like someone goofed in the .htaccess file on the server side. They made VBS a text file type rather than an executable file type. You hang out there a lot, so I'll let you give them the news.

Problem Getting Downloads from Kelly's XP (XPPSP2)

A few days ago, with no change to settings I can find including Active X or JAVA script on the IE6SP1 Options toolbar, I found that when I access here Kelly's XP Tweaks and click one of the Tweaks or Fixes instead of getting the ususal downloads where do you want to save dialogue box, I get the steps for the regedit or the VB Script typed out-- for example on the first line left "1. Add Tweak UI Icon to the Control Panel." instead of a download, I get a VB script edit opportunity.

Re: Problem Getting Downloads from Kelly's XP (XPP

The problem I faced Unk and this comes up more than rarely, is that if I link to the site then I can't show the problem. I never copy for copying's sake, and I link 99% of the time I'm not trying to violate anyone's copyright How is this different from copying a part of a KB to emphasize a point which is done a million times a day? I was just trying to convey what I'm seeing. I don't know a lot about VB Scripts, but in this case I could have said it's showing me the VB Script edit opportunity--and I need to get more comfortable with that File Types dialogue box in Windows Explorer and I will.

I asked Kelly who didn't have a problem with the paste and she said:
    __________________________________________________ ____________________

"You have the default file type set to Edit instead of Open.

    Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types/.VBS/Advanced/
Highlight Open/Set Default and Confirm open after download."

    __________________________________________________ ___________________________

I have done that several times including with a reboot and I can't make it stick. The problem I'm having if this impacts making the change happen is that when I highlight open the "set default button is ghosted." If I take the checkmark out to unghost it, and then put it in it doesn't change the outcome of not sticking. There is something I'm missing here, but I can't figure out what.

Any help would be appreciated. I didn't change the setting in the first place but something did.

Your revised description explains your problem excellently. While we all can appreciate your frustration with your issue, copying out the script only multiplies frustration; making it harder to address your problem. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

What you're suffering from is a standard security procedure for VBS scripts - disabling them from accidental double-clicks (such as in infected emails). Thus, I would suggest that this comes from some recent security-related update. Could it be something to do with Norton - which I do not run. SpyBot and Ad-Aware do not seem to reach to the area of this problem. Have you gone through ALL the updates, tweaks (online and offline) and installs that you have done since you last accessed one of Kelly's scripts?

Re: Problem Getting Downloads from Kelly's XP (XPP

I'm going to continue try to be as careful as I can not to paste what might be copyrighted--I appreciate the issue well. I know we have people on the Lounge that do copyright/patent at a high level every day for years, and I'm not one but sometimes copying a sentence or two helps emphasize and pick out the point in a long say KB.

I think you shed light on a good idea there--and I'll bet you're onto it there because I really believe I did what I should have to highlight Open in that dialogue box and I got the kind of flickering of the desktop icons you often do when you make a change in one of the components that lives in and is part of Windows Explorer. I have put in a couple hotfixes for Office 2003; recently ran Spybot, Adaware. I chkdsk /r'd from the Recovery Console--but I've done that before and it never impacted. I doubt Norton but it's always a very good idea--it can do a lot of things when it wants to to make life interesting.

I'm also having trouble hitting certain websites getting this message that Active X settings won't let me display a page, and a minute ago trying to post right here I got that--made a new window still got it--closed the Lounge Windows still got it all the while being able to post concommitantly in the test areas. I've been all over my Security settingsincluding active X settings and the advanced Tab of Internet Options--nothing's been changed and had the same trouble hitting selected web sites like www.extremetech.com with the same error message only to be able to hit it when I tried later which is inconsistent and strange.

I'm also running SP2 Beta/WU 5 Beta and recently put in 9 of those updates I was fed to make the testing mean as much as possible--not a lot of choice there--not trying to violate a Beta agreement or discuss in the wrong place--I'll take that to where those issues should go. It's always possible anything could happen there.

You may have simply stumbled across one of the additional security measures in WinXP-SP2 Beta. Was Kelly aware that you are running the Beta? On balance, I would have expected MS to add such a feature as part of "Trustworthy Computing". If that is the case, I would agree it to be irritating that you can't disable it.

That's what one gets, when one runs a beta product of any kind on a "production" machine. Buyer beware, especially if it's something as big as your (critical) OS ! !

Of course your 1000% right there Al--that's why a high percent of people put Betas on their test machines and many pick up a cheaper one to test Betas on.

Do NOT set the default to execute. Is she nuts? This would execute any VBS you accidentally double-clicked in Windows Explorer.

As a short term work-around, right-click and use Save Target As.

Have you posted the problem at the news group for BETA testers?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Problem Getting Downloads from Kelly's XP (XPP

    Dave--

I am putting any possibly error I have in One Note because it's so easy to work with and make an issue diary with, harvesting them from Event Viewer when they are there, and making a log of my own of them so I can feed them the best possible information. They have several NG's set up as they always do for SP2 issues divided by subject and Windows Update V Beta and I am putting them up there as well.I don't know how long they have done this, but they also have a downloadable "Microsoft Beta Client" that allows you to click an icon to send issues/problems in a unified format for them to track.

I didn't want to start discussing a Beta here and then have people say you're not supposed to by agreement or do it in the wrong place, and wasn't at all trying to take up Lounge space to air Beta issues, but I felt I had to mention it as a possible cause out of fairness to people who were taking their time to help. I know I'm hardly the only one that has access to Betas or has done a lot of Beta testing here--and MSDN allows it to a lot of people as well.

Other situations like Style XP not working with it or installing with it-- or components of Stardocks not working with it I'm not bringing to the Lounge. I hope I can get TGTSoft to catch up to that when they're ready. There are a couple IE crashes--one that had been fixed by a special hotfix--that are back again probably due to the Beta but I didn't bring them up here.

Re: Problem Getting Downloads from Kelly's XP (XPP

I don't know VB script and VB and only wish I did. I wish I understood the thick MS Press book on scripting Windows 2000 as well, not to mention scripting and automation, dos batch files, the use of variables to store information, scriptomatic, input box commands, WSJ, CGI, deciphering script errors, and the list never ends. I know you are able to get a tremendous amount done with VB scripts and I see them on the Word section all the time. So for that and many other reasons, I'm just not sure I'm any better judge of what nuts is than I am as to whether a VB script is written correctly. If I had to guess, I imagine if there are script errors, there aren't many on her site, but I know that that download worked for me when I could get to it through the download box. You might set your file box to edit and take a look at a few and see what you think. I find the A-Z part of her site a great teaching aid for me just like the Lounge and now Lounge Search. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I encourage you and anyone else to look at her site closely, particularly the amount of great work she has done with her Tweaks and A-Z portion of that site (divided into 15 parts) and continuously updated. I miss those tweaks and fixes--600 plus and growing, because now until I solve this problem I can't access this and she's told me her fix and I can't make it work--and I haven't had trouble using that dialouge box before.

In addition, she works tirelessly as you do to knock a lot of XP problems and some fairly difficult ones out of the park on the XP newsgroups day in and day out. She and her site are a great resource to me and I think a lot of people.

"As a short term work-around, right-click and use Save Target As." Jefferson--you're writing this as a work-around correction for her script--not as a work-around for me aren't you?

I would be really appreciative if anyone can figure out what's going on that I see the script to edit rather than the downloads dialouge box. It's only happening to me at the Kelly's Tweaks site --no where else. That's what seems like the definition of nuts to me.

Re: Problem Getting Downloads from Kelly's XP (XPP

Whoa! No one ever said these VBScript files have errors in them, or that their content has anything to do with what happens when you click the links to them.

What you're seeing is that IE is handling a file with a .VBS extension as though it has a .TXT extension rather than a .EXE extension. Between the web server and IE, they are, IMHO, handling this file extension incorrectly. There might be more than one way to fix that, but the File Types dialog is not likely to be relevant. (If the action were governed by that setting, it would open in Notepad or some other editor rather than in IE.)

The right-click work-around to download the .VBS files is indeed for you. Unless you prefer to copy and paste the VBS code manually. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

P.S. What's going on in Word typically is VBA, Visual Basic for Applications. About 80% the same, but some significant differences that aren't relevant here.

<hr>Do you think that this could have anything at all to do with my ISP<hr>
Well, is your ISP hosting Kelly's Korner or controlling your browser? Didn't think so.

The workaround is simple: right click, save as, and then once it's saved, run the script. VBS scripts should never be run directly from a web page. Whether they do or not is another story.
