Slow log on

Anyone else experiencing extremely slow log on time in to the Lounge? Also slow going from screen to screen or thread to thread within the Lounge? When I log in, I can go get a brew and come back to wait for it. Progress bar goes to about 3/4 and just crawls from there. Slowest is log on though.

All other times are normal for other sites, only here in the Lounge. When first on the new server, it was fine, just the last day or so. I haven't changed or added anything new on my system.

Yes, so slow that it took nearly 5 minutes for this reply page to be served up (on cable modem at that). Appreciate your post though, since it points to something other than my ISP or computer. I guess (hope) the source of this problem will be identified and rectified in time.

See the Newsflash (if you can get there). There is a serious problem with the Lounge ISP since about 9:00 UTC on January 3rd. The Admins are aware of it.

Re: Slow log on

Oh yes...since 3:30PM on Friday...real torture for me to get in here...entry was 45 min or so...then 5+ more minutes for each 'page'...kept trying...so finally decided to call my cable ISP today - they even had a hard time trying to access entry here...so it wasn't just me.
I just decided to try to see if I could access here before I went to bed...waited 3-5 minutes for entry...then another 2 minutes to access the Words On High...then another 2 minutes to access this Forum...then 2 minutes to access the reply section that I'm typing this on.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things will be resolved...I'm trying to quit smoking...and this problem with non-entry here isn't helping me.

Hans, And all the other responders,

I couldn't even get back on to reply to any of your messages, but I DID note the message from Claude about this problem.
I noted also that my popup stopper prog showed 1352 popups blocked from wopr.com during that small time period??? Did something of that nature have anything to do with the Lounge going on "strike"?

It would be VERY interesting to find out the exact cause of it. All seems to be fine right now.

Re: Slow log on

Funny that you should mention those popups...when I was chatting with my ISP tech and he was trying to access here...he mentioned that there were many popups coming at him on his end...and I made the comment to him that I never had popups ever here and this was even before I had installed POW! (old popup stopper) or even my current popup stopper NoAds. Very strange indeed!

Lonnie,

Right. I never saw that many show up in such a short period. It stood out like a sore thumb.

Note to some of the Admins: Any thoughts?

No one I called to see if they ever heard of the Hosts file or etc folder in the Windows Drivers folders in Comcast Tech Support--I called 5 to see had ever heard of the Hosts file. One guy mentioned the Etc folder in Linux.

What does the HOSTS file have to do with this thread?
SMBP, are you out in NEVER NEVER land again?

Yes...I'm wondering also. Maybe he's referring to <post#=326150>post 326150</post#> and <post#=326453>post 326453</post#>? Which is over my head anyway.

Re: Slow log on

Do you mean the Never Never land that is in X-Box, Play Station 2 and Game Boy Advance, or the one that has gung-ho Santa Monica deputies crawling all over it? I didn't mean to veer the thread off and what I want to know about hosts and the Lounge transition to learn from it I'll put in a separate thread you're right.

I understand that the slow log on was due to a circuit problem with Covad which must be the Lounge's ISP for web hosting. I was referring to the override some of us (I'd like to know how many) were asked to use because of the "braindeadness" of our ISP's so I'll put up a thread on that. I'd just like to find out the significance of the hosts file, what setting in the ISP's had to be overcome so I can get a little bit of a grip on that--I had an almost impossible time getting to the Lounge past the transition screen--I found I could get there by the IP address or by putting the IP adress in the Main Index url, but that the Lounge still wasn't functional before the paste and the Raders of the Lost Arc search for hosts in Drivers>Etc.

Re: Slow log on

The HOSTS file interfaces with DNS (Domain Name Service) and IP (Internet Protocol) addresses (and the TCP/IP protocol). Your question is appreciated, but this really starts going into the plumbing of how the Internet - as well as advanced Networking issues. In brief terms, the IP address that www.wopr.com resolves to was changed. In virtually all cases where Loungers were relying on their ISPs for DNS, this change was not promptly propagated. Thus Loungers had to force the change by editing their HOSTS files. You may understand this better by Googling on DNS and IP, but I seriously recommend that you get a copy of one of the textbooks that covers the Networking part of the MCSE syllabus and have a read of it.

SMBP,
Now that the "Search"s back, do a search here on HOSTS and you will find all you need to know.

And the NEVER NEVER Land I am referring to is "Out of your Mind" which must be before your time.

Re: Slow log on

I have them--I'm starting in--Networking inside out and a number of the Broadband report types sites probably have some info and I put some networking sites up in threads that probably have much info. There are also some only Hosts specialty sites. What I wonder is what prompted Mike Wolfman and those administrating the server transition that there would be these problems and they would have to have people edit the host files or was that just a given that they knew their were configurations from some ISPs because of the transition that were going to have to be over ridden by editing Hosts. Was it something they were able to do by monitoring network traffic or attempts to reach the servers--just want to understand on some level?

Unk--I'll bet you anything there are dismayed people trying to get to the lounge and not just one or two because of this however would be the articulate "Host file" client's mini-DNS server resolving FDQN's to IP addresses way to say it issue. In other words if there are ball parks of 11, 000 active loungers right now--a whole bunch can't resolve the hosts paste problem.

I have this as a take home: When clients have trouble accessing your system by its FQDN and all other systems on your network can access the system without incident, you should check the hosts file on the system for the incorrect static entry. I must have not had the correct "static entry" until I modified the hosts file.

I copied my Hosts file and then tried to mimic the format of the Host file with the info I was given from that message to edit. What I'm not sure of and curious is

1) I downloaded their Hosts file and dragged it into my etc.
2) I started with the file in drivers/etc and got a whaddyawannaopenwith--and picked notepad for the reason that I was going to have to edit notepad.
3) What was it doing in a Driver's folder. It must have a different nuance or shade of driver meaning here.
4) Is the fact that the Etc folder is so major in Unix--I haven't used Linux distros or any open source OS's and Mike Wolfman was going to Linux boxes have any connection to the [b]Etc named folder that contains Hosts in Windows OS's?

I put in this edit(s)--did part of it not matter and did any of it--it got me past that transition message to the Lounge--BTW it was as you know actually in system32driversetchosts and my search didn't jump to hosts and still doesn't. I knew it had a good chance of being in the system32 and a hosts site led me to the path--Reason I ask because when I just pasted in the two lines the Lounge Admin gave me --I didn't get here--then I decided to follow the format in the "hosts notepad." Isn't the spacing --spaces between the words critical?
