Quality laser printers with auto-sheet feeder?

Hello,

If a printer has an auto-sheet feeding facility it can save you a bomb in paper consumption.

I am trying to find out which are the printers which for a modest price can offer me this functionality.

Does anyone have any recommendations in this regard?

Thanks.

Can you define "auto-sheet feeding facility" ? - I can't really get my head round what the alternative might be.

And you may also need to define 'modest'.....

And while you're contemplating Leif's questions, have you taken a look at the HP product line? Pretty easy to do and we all "think" they are the market leader in most parts of the world.

Hi,

By sheet-feeder, I mean an auto-feeder by which I can print duplex automatically.
So from Word, I'll select the duplex-try & it will itelf turn around the paper & print on the back.

I already looked through hp.com & also emailed HP and didn't get a reply back.

I don't know what "modest" means - I need you to point me in the right direction.

Cheers.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by bigaldoc on 04-Jan-04 10:47. )</P>Aha! Auto duplex is a LOT different than auto sheet feed, commonly called ADF (automatic document feed) by many printer manufacturers. I still think you should troll the HP web sites for printers to see if you can find what you want and can afford. For example, I have an HP970cxi, which is admittedly not laser, but will auto-duplex. It's not a $100 or $200 printer by any means, but you get what you pay for. I can understand why you won't get a reply back from HP - they CAN'T possibly have staff enough to reply to every individual question like that. They expect you to do a little shopping on your own.

Edited to add: I can't help myself but come back to add something. You see, this thread is a good example of what has been pointed out to you in other threads and even taken as mean-spirited by at least one Lounger. Your question is so broad as to be unanswerable in its present form. It's kind of like asking "what's the best car" or "where's the best country to live?" It's just about impossible to answer that kind of question without getting hundreds of varying opinions, which do little or nothing to help you. On the other hand, if you do a little trolling or asking around, or window shopping in local stores, if applicable, and then come to the Lounge and ask for opinions on Product XYZ or alternatives, there's a high probability that you'll get some meaningful advice and counsel. Hope YOU don't take this comment as mean-spirited - I really DO think we want to help you!

The last printer I used that would duplex internally was, I believe, the HP LaserJet 4si. However, that was about 5 years ago. That either means they're all dead or you could pick one up really cheap. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Maybe if you tell us some of your other printing requirements we could make some recommendations.

Do you want to print colour? photo-quality? black-and-white only?
Do you want to print standard size paper (Letter / A4) or do you need oversize?
Roughly how many prints do you expect to do (< 10 a day? > 1000 a day?, ...)
How important is purchase cost, do you have a particular budget in mind?
How important are running costs?
Have you already decided on a technology type, such as Laser Printer or Inkjet?
Do you need to connect the printer for workgroup network access or for a single user?
etc.

Re: Quality laser printers with auto-sheet feeder?

We (almost) always choose HP laserjet printers, and you could go through their website's personal recommendation process, or just look at those thought appropriate for home or home office.

A couple of pointers:

a) HP's convention is that a laserprinter which is duplex-capable has a D after its model number, so you can get model numbers like 2300, 2300D, 2300N, 2300DN, 2300DTN (where N means network-capable).

all printer manufacturers price their products very cheaply (well, almost!), as in a "loss leader", and make their money on the consumables, like toner cartridges. Over the life of a printer product you will probably spend many times the purchase cost on replacement toner cartridges.

Hope this helps - but you will have seen that you have to ask the right questions to get close to the specification you actually want!
