Reformatting with gateway's gator go back

I am reformatting a friends computer and the go back on it is giving me some troubles. I have disabled it and everytime I restart it, it gives me the screen "If you are having troubles, hit the space bar", so I know that it has not been disabled. Also, thinking I disabled it, when I am in dos mode the format process goes by fast. So theres another clue it is not disabled. I have tried to put in the disk that came with the computer, but no luck. It gets to the point where it asks me to do a virus scan(which comes back negative), then I get the a: at which I type in setup, it tells me bad command or file name. Any suggestions?

Goback modifies the boot sector of the hard drive to provide its restore services. You can read this Symantec document for Goback removal instructions or boot with a floppy that supports CD-ROM access, and run setup for Windows from the CD drive - not the A: drive, as you have been trying to do.

Welcome. I was going to add before that Windows 98 setup will re-write the boot sector, so if you format and install Windows, undoing the changes that GoBack makes are unnecessary. Just remember that when you boot with the floppy, you will need to enable CD-ROM access, and run SETUP from the CD. The setup.exe program is not on the floppy so it will tell you that it cannot run if the prompt looks like:

A:

    You would instead enter

R:setup

where R: is the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM.

If you need a boot disk that supports CD access from DOS, you can obtain whatever flavour you prefer from BootDisk.com.
