    Perhaps the origin of the data in Access has meant that Null Values have crept into the data. See whether you can do a Search and Replace while the data is in Excel for them. In the Find box press Alt and 0160 simultaneously, and in the Replace box make sure that the cursor is all the way to the left. HTH

    Thanks for your answer. It took me a while to track down the original file, and there were no Null values.

    Also, since I tested with the exact same contacts by making copies to another folder, making changes on the copy and dragging the modified copy back to the original - I would assume that any "inherited" problem would cancel itself out.

    But since the phenomena does not make sense, I am open to trying anything.
