Find/Replace & Spell Check Issue (Word 2000)

I am experiencing issues regarding MS Word 2000. When I open the application, and type in a bunch of gargle and then one single word "dog" and then try to do a find/replace, it looks like a second session opens up on the status bar, just a "W" but no text in the properties, the background screen is greyed out. Now I can restore the "W" session and eventually it will appear properly, but its rather annoying. The same happens when I perform a spell check.

    Any ideas?????

(Edited by jscher2000 on 06-Jan-04 09:45. One other thought...)
We've had discussion in the past about a feature of the MS configuration tool TweakUI, and how it's "Don't allow windows to steal focus" setting (not its exact name, probably) can cause dialogs to appear behind the application window. Not exactly what you're describing, but if you have installed/used TweakUI, it's worth a check.

Added: Do you have any add-ins installed in Word, such as WOPR, Adobe PDFMaker, etc.? This multiplies the possibilities.

I'd also close Word & delete it's temp files & also see if you have more than one normal.dot. You can probably track this down by following the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
    Cheers,

Thanks for all of the advice, I will try it. It also appears that there is a patch for Adobe Acrobat that also clears this up!

    As another thing to check:

Word in all versions has problems with multi-monitor support. Most often mentioned is ATI's Hydravision software.
The effects sound like those you are describing ("phantom" Word windows with "Find/Replace" and spell checking).
If you find "Desk95.exe" in the task manager, try if killing it fixes the problem.

KB 810937 describes some other problems related to multi-monitor support.
