Printhood Deletion Error message on start up

I have recently started getting a pop-up error message when I start my PC up. Standard gray Windows error message box with only an OK button to close. The message says "Printhood is a required windows folder and should not be deleted." I don't remember trying to delete the printhood folder and can't imagine that I would do so.

I close the error dialogue box and go on with no ill affects and I am able to print just fine so I am curious to know how to clear the error message so it will stop popping up.

    Any ideas?

Just as a check, do you regularly run the protective measures mentioned in <!post=Star Post 296439,296439>Star Post 296439<!/post>? Printhood, AFAIK, is a customisation rather than a default file name.

I run AdAware weekly to clear out the various tracking cookies that show up along with getting rid of the more common trojans that show up from time to time.

Printhood seems to be a standard windows hidden system folder. I found it in my PC here at work, Documents and Settings/username/Printhood.

I need to confirm when I get home that there is a Printhood folder in each of he user name folders on the machine there. It seems to be an empty folder, unless the contents of it are hidden as well.

<img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>Pardon my muddle. I was thinking that the Printhood name came in with WinXP and not with Win2K.

The only way (so far) Windows hides the contents of a folder is by making the folder inaccessible. So, if you see nothing inside a hidden folder, there is nothing there.

If the folder is indeed missing and you do wish to recover it, you have two main options. One is to attempt to manually recreate it - with all the same attributes for System, Read-Only and Hidden that it should have had. If that doesn't take fully, which it may not, then you can try running the Repair option from the Install CD. You may need to apply patches after running the Repair option.

Thom, Have you checked all the various startup locations for something you don't recognize? What have you changed on your system recently?

I have checked every startup location that I can think of. I use the startup control panel tool to see what is happening and that makes it easy to control what is happening when Windows boots up.

I have a printhood folder in each profile on the machine so I am not sure where to look next.

Do you mean MSCONFIG? Just in case you don't, then type that in the Start|Run command and check the last tab.

If that produces nothing, then you could try running a Repair option on your Install CD. Put the CD in the drive, and when it asks you what you would like to do, choose Repair.
