    Old Zip drive losing files

I just installed a new HD and reinstalled all my software. If I insert a zip disk that contains data and work on the computer for awhile, even if I do not access the zip drive, when I come back to the zip drive it will be blank, completely empty. It's not that the drive cannot see the disk, if I double check it on another computer, the disk really has been rendered blank.

The system is a Windows ME system and the Zip drive is a parallel port system. I had mostly the same software on the old system and it never had this problem. The only difference is I switched from Office 97 to XP in the upgrade. I also first noticed the problem when I tried to use Word XP to save a file to the Zip disk; although, I cannot say that XP caused the problem.

Sometimes, when I try to save a file to a zip disk, the computer will tell me it cannot write to the drive. If I then check the drive, it will appear to have no files and no free space. If I then reboot, it will have free space but be completely blank.

The drive and disk were working just fine before swapping hard drives so I suspect it's a driver type of issue but, as I said, I downloaded the latest driver. I have tried the disk and drive on another computer and they work fine so it is unlikely to be a hardware problem. I have also swapped for a new disk with the same results.

Iomega technical support was completely unhelpful. Has anyone heard of this problem?

Re: Old Zip drive losing files

I would recommend rolling back the driver to a previous version. I can't be of much help on exactly how to do this, in some cases, you can just delete the driver file and all references to it, without a problem. In others, I've had to go so far as to reinstall the operating system, although admittedly, this was back in the pre-NT days. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> Hopefully you can just remove the hardware from the control panel, and reinstall from the disc that came with the unit.

Iomega technical support might be useful for much, but they may be able to help you in your quest to locate an older driver?

    Hope this helps!

Re: Old Zip drive losing files

My computer only supports one HD so I had to remove the old one and then build up the new one from stratch so I have no way to load the drivers from the old HD. I tried Iomega technical support before posting anything here but all I got were canned answers that were only vaguely related to the question I posted.

I've used Zip drives on four different computers over the years and none of them of them has been problem-free.
