Letting Outook determine format for sending (Outlook 2002 NL)

    Goodmorning,

    First of all the best whishes for 2004!!! <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30>

Can anybody tell me if the following is possible:

I know I can individually set the internet settings (how Outlook sends a mail to an external recipient) so that Outlook determines the best format for sending. (rightclick on contact, choose properties, then you have three options for your internetformat: a. Outlook determines best format, b. plain text, c. RTF format from Outlook).

Is there a possibility to choose this setting for all your contacts at once? I only can find HTML, plain text or RTF?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Thank you Daphne <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I hope 2004 does not just whish on by. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Does the option in the attached screen shot not solve the problem? If you plan to send to all contacts in this manner, why not make it the default setting?

Thank you for your quick reply!

Unfortunately that was not the answer I was looking for, I already found that option, but I need something else...
If I use this option, it still doesn't work on my contacts. If I check these external contacts in my adressbook, I still see that some of them are still being send as p.e. RTF.

    Anyway thanks!

    Hello David,

I'm just a dutch blond girl which might explain why I don't understand the last sentence. I expect it to be a typing error, but can you explain it to me anyway? <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20>

I believe that in the last sentence Dave is saying that if you reply or forward a message you receive, there is no reason to change the format, since the sender's format is inherited by you, and the message you in turn send should be readable by all recipients. He also is referring to the ability to manually change the message Format via the Format menu at the time that you are editing the message, but that it's rarely necessary to do so.

I took a quick look at the VBA Object Model and it appears in OL 2002 that the default send format for each Contact EMail Address is not exposed, so unless we can do something with Views, I don't see a way to bulk change the default sender format other than as noted above. But I could be wrong, it was a very cursory look.

Re: Letting Outook determine format for sending (O

Mmm... I think that my question is not clear enough...:

    My colleague has a contactbook.
In this contactbook she has imported her personal distributionlists and contacts from her former personal addressbook. (we've migrated from exchange client to outlook 2002).

Since this has been done, some of the recipients from her distributionlist receive messages with .doc attachments as a .dat attachment.
When she changes the Internetformat one by one to 'let Outlook decide' the recipient receives the message with .doc in the right way.
(Select contacts, select distributionlist, select properties, select contact, choose Internetformat)

As her distributionlists are rather big, it's takes a lot of time to change these contacts. So the question is, is there a possibility to change all these formats for contacts in one action.

I hope that the situation is better explained now?

Have a nice weekend and many thanks in advance!

I think I understand the question, and I hope someone has a better answer. My answer is:

    1. Adjusting the Global setting the way WyllyWylly explained should be OK for all future Contacts added
    2. I don't see a way to bulk change the Contact-Email-specific Internet Format for existing Contacts
    3. I don't see that for OL 2000 and OL XP any VBA code can be written to bulk change existing Contacts
    4. I don't see a way to bulk change the Contact-Email-specific Internet Format for existing Contacts by creating a Custom View

What happens if you export a Contact to, say, an Excel CSV file and then reimport it?

I am using Office 2003 and am NOT able to get where you have this choice. Is there a step missing or wrong with the following "(Select contacts, select distributionlist, select properties, select contact, choose Internetformat)"

I got it, I was using the "Contacts" in my "Navigation Pane" and not the address book drop down.

I think the real problem with "messages with .doc attachments as a .dat attachment" is not because of the setting, but with the mishandling of the files by the ISP's involved.

Are the problem receivers using the same ISP?

Re: Letting Outook determine format for sending (O

When I use the Export wizard on Contacts in Outlook 2000, only the following e-mail fields are presented in the "Map Custom Fields" dialog:

    Address
    Type
    Display Name

I can't see how to get at the Internet Send Format. Any chance that Redemption or CDO exposes this?

I haven't had a chance to check this properly, but I'm just wondering whether - on reimporting the the Contact - the InternetFormat automatically gets set to "let Outlook decide".
