Computer slow for some actions (WIN XP HOME)

A friend was copying a music CD and got an error message that there had been an error. But then he checked the copy and it worked fine. So he decided to try to make a copy of the copy and his system froze. After he restarted the system, he found that his Wallpaper was gone and all of his email messages were gone. He first tried a system restore which did not resolve the issue. He then did a restore of his email messages from a backup copy he had made about a week previous. Now he says that when he right clicks on anything, it takes about 16 seconds for the menu to open. Also, some programs such as word are real slow in opening. He received a PowerPoint presentation by email, when he clicks on the attachment to open the PPS - it takes about 30 seconds to open. Other shortcut icons, such as MS MONEY work fine.

I suggested a Repair Installation of WIN XP. He asked me to put the question to the forum. Any thoughts?

You could first try the System File Checker - the "modern" version of ScanDisk. Type

    cmd

    at Start|Run

Then type at the prompt that appears

    sfc /scannow

Your friend should have his Install CD at hand in case - in case it is asked for. After this is over, he may have to reinstall some patches. If performance doesn't improve, then a Repair Install could be a good next step.

Are you sure it isn't a Virus or Trojan?

    Trebor--

After sfc ask the friend to run a viral scan and Spybot and Adaware. Is any helpful error or event info in event viewer? run>eventvwr.msc>expand the box>click application and system>expand box and look at any warnings or error messages.

Another possibility: see <post#=329007>post 329007</post#>. This would have kicked in at some point late on 1/7/04.
