    Determine the name of a cell (Excel 97)

    Hi

    Sorry about this. I haven't done much work with Excel, and probably don't know a lot of things I should.

    Is there a function you can use to determine the "name" of a cell? I did a search, but can't find anything.

    Thanks
    Dale

    Do you want to do this in a formula on a worksheet, or in VBA code? Perhaps if you explain what you want to accomplish, it is easier for us to provide assistance.

    Hi Hans

    I'm hoping for a formula to insert into a worksheet.

    As far as I know, there is no built-in function for this. Try one of the custom functions from the thread JohnBF posted a link to.

    I usually do it the other way.
    I type the range names in the cells next to the cells, then I use insert -name - create to assign the names to the cells.

    Dale, those Functions from Steve and Andrew should update automatically, but if you want a belt AND suspenders, put

    Application.Volatile = True

    after the Dim statements. Check the Excel VBA Help on the Volatile Method to see how it applies.

    Application.volatile will still not work in all cases. If you have a function (for example) that is based on cell formatting (checking color of cell, averaging a range of cells, based on color, etc) the "act" of changing the color of the cell, does not register as a "change" so it will not cause a recalc.
